The most popular girl in school asked my bullied son to dance at prom — it turned out to be a cruel joke, but WHAT he did next made my knees tremble.
My son, Mason, was bullied at school.
His classmates mocked his weight, taped embarrassing photos of his face to his locker, and made jokes about him in group chats.
Every time I wanted to go to the principal and do something about it, Mason would always say:
"Mom, please don't. I'll handle it myself."
When prom season arrived, not a single girl agreed to go with him.
So he went alone.
I was at prom too because I had volunteered to help supervise the event.
Then, in the middle of the evening, while Mason was sitting alone at a table, Brielle walked over to him.
She was the prettiest and most popular girl in school.
The cheerleading star.
Every boy wanted to date her, and every girl wanted to be her friend.
She personally asked Mason to dance.
Mason was so happy.
For the first time all evening, I saw him smile.
As they danced, his classmates stared and whispered to one another.
When the dance ended, Brielle suddenly BURST OUT LAUGHING.
Mason looked confused and asked what was going on.
She laughed right in his face and said:
"Did you really think I'd ask you to dance for no reason? I lost a bet with my friends. My PUNISHMENT was having to dance with you."
It felt like my son's heart broke right there.
I walked toward him, wanting to support him.
He took a deep breath and said:
"Mom, don't worry. I'm okay. Really. I just need five minutes. I'll be right back."
I stood there waiting for him.
Off to the side, Brielle was still laughing with her friends.
I was just about ready to walk over there and tell her exactly what I thought about her behavior.
But suddenly, the music stopped.
I looked up and saw Mason standing on the stage.
He looked directly at Brielle before saying ONE THING that made the entire room fall silent.
And I held my breath. ⬇️
