When Michael went out to milk, our CowManager ear tag sent an alert. He found a beautiful, full-sized little heifer calf out in the field! Her mom, Missouri, wasn't supposed to calve until September. We pregnancy checked her in October and November with no luck, and it wasn't until December that she finally tested positive. We had absolutely no idea she was due so soon and had only recently dried her off when she started springing.

Our new little girl isn't completely out of the woods just yet. Since Missouri was only making colostrum for two weeks, she didn't give a lot this morning. We aren't sure if the calf nursed before Michael found her, so we gave her what we had and are currently thawing out our backup stash to make sure she gets exactly what she needs.

Since Missouri gave us such a wild surprise, we are now wondering who else might be hiding a secret in the pasture and we have to get them palpated soon so we can make sure they get dried off with plenty of time.

Milking in the rain is one of our least favorite hobbies.

There are times when I scream SH*T very loudly. This was definitely one of them.

I love it when cows come in to be milked clean. Tomorrow I’ll show what it looks like when they come in after a storm and what a pain it is to clean off all the mud before we can ever put a milking claw on them.

We will ALWAYS do anything in our power to keep our animals safe, healthy, and injectable-free. We pride ourselves on doing things right, our cows are regularly tested, treated organically, and regeneratively raised on clean pastures. We work incredibly hard to produce the healthiest, chemical-free food possible for our community.

But right now, the latest agricultural news in Texas is exposing a terrifying reality. None of us are exempt from government overreach.

It doesn't matter if you are a backyard homesteader with 3 chickens, a regeneratively raised organic practice farm like ours, or a massive commercial operation. If the USDA or the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) decides something is wrong on your property, they have the ultimate authority to step in and dictate exactly what happens to your animals.

Even if you are doing everything right, even if your herd is well-cared for, and even if you are fully willing to use proven, safe, organic treatments for common pests.

IT DOESN’T STOP THEM.

If the government decides their synthetic method is the only method, they can legally mandate forced injections. They can force you to pump your clean herd full of synthetic chemicals against your will, completely destroying your organic certification and your business model in the process.

It is a truly scary world we live in when state and federal agencies can step onto private land and completely strip away a farmer's right to choose how they care for their own animals, simply because your clean methods aren't the way "they see fit."

Our right to raise clean food, and your right to choose it, depends on standing up to this overreach. We stand with agriculture freedom, agriculture safety, and the health of the nation. 🐄🌱

Must be highly flexible, willing to travel, and ready to feed a baby calf at a moment's notice. I love that these kids never know what is coming their way next, but they just jump in and get it done.
