I’m sharing our experience because people need to know that a city ordinance is not always the final word.

Tonight was one of those nights that reminded me exactly why we named this place Our Family Farms.

Michael and I had meetings we needed to attend tonight.

Alyssa was supposed to be off.

But cows don't really care about anyone's schedule, so she came in and milked anyway. She washed the buckets, took apart and cleaned the milking claw, and made sure everything was taken care of.

Which I appreciate even more because this morning she had to clean the claw too... because last night I left it dirty in the sink and sank into bed.

That's real life around here.

Some nights everything gets done.

Some nights the kids are all in bed by 8:30 like they're supposed to be.

And some nights they're definitely not, and Michael and I are checking bedrooms, reminding someone to go to sleep, figuring out who still needs what, and wondering how it got so late.

The kids still need dinner.

There are buckets that need washing.

Cows that have to be milked.

Equipment that has to be cleaned.

Deliveries to make.

Meetings to attend.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it is a stack of back-to-school paperwork that I still haven't completely signed.

There is no perfectly organized farm family over here.

There are just a bunch of us doing our best, picking up where someone else left off, and helping each other when the day gets bigger than one person can handle.

My dad and Christina are the same way. They aren't doing deliveries tomorrow, but if I called and said I needed them, I know they would get in the truck and go without ever asking me for a dime.

Nobody is keeping score.

Sometimes Alyssa covers the milking.

Sometimes someone else handles a delivery.

Sometimes Michael handles something because I can't.

Sometimes I leave a dirty milking claw in the sink and someone loves me enough to clean it the next morning. 😂

And that is exactly why this place is called Our Family Farms.

It isn't a marketing name.

It's quite literally what we are.

Our family, farming together.

Not perfectly.

Not always on schedule.

Not always with every box checked or every piece of paperwork signed.

But together.

And at the end of these really full days, I think that's the part I'm most grateful for.

The last two days gave Michael and me a lot to think about.

We were invited to take part in conversations surrounding Blue Zones, including a Food Systems Focus Group and a larger discussion about initiative, readiness, purpose, belonging, movement, connection, and the way our communities shape everyday life.

And honestly, so much of it brought us right back to why we built Our Family Farms TX in the first place.

We never wanted this to be just a place where people buy milk.

We want this farm to become an educational hub for families and farmers across the Valley.

We get messages all the time asking if families can come feed a calf, learn how to milk a cow, pet a cow, see the bees, learn where their food comes from, or simply experience farm life for themselves.

And we love that.

We want children to know that milk does not start in a grocery store.

We want families to understand more about the food they eat and the people who produce it.

We want young people to be able to ask questions, get their hands dirty, learn something new, and maybe even discover a love for agriculture.

We want other farmers to know they have people they can call, learn from, share ideas with, and grow alongside.

Because one of the greatest gifts this farm has given us is community.

Through farming, we have connected with families, farmers, organizations, and people from all over the world. And no matter what room we walk into, it has never mattered whether we know the most.

Someone makes room for us.

We sit down.

We listen.

We learn.

We share what we know.

And we join in.

And to every farmer who has answered a message from us at 1:00 in the morning because something was wrong and we needed help, thank you.

To every person who has talked us through a sick calf, a feeding question, a milking issue, a fencing problem, or one of the hundred other things that can go wrong on a farm, thank you.

That is community too.

That is exactly the kind of community we want to keep building here.

A place where families feel welcome.

A place where farmers support farmers.

A place where kids can learn where their food comes from.

A place where questions are encouraged.

A place where people can reconnect with agriculture, animals, food, and each other.

We are still growing into that dream, but every message asking when you can visit, every child who wants to feed a calf, every family curious about milking a cow, every farmer who reaches out, and every person who tells us they are cheering us on reminds us why we keep going.

Your support matters.

Your prayers matter.

Your well wishes matter.

Even your dreams of coming out to visit us someday matter.

You encourage us to keep learning, keep building, and keep becoming better people.

Michael said something this week that I absolutely loved.

“We can make changes in the world. It just starts with the spark.”

You all have been part of that spark for us.

And we love this community more than we can ever properly put into words.

🐄 NOW HIRING | FARM, RANCH & PROPERTY ASSISTANT

Our Family Farms TX is looking for a dependable, hardworking person to help care for our animals, maintain our properties and complete farm, ranch and construction projects in the Los Fresnos area.

This is real, hands-on outdoor work and no two days are exactly the same. One day may involve cows and milking, while another may involve landscaping, repairs, loading hay or helping finish out a building.

The work done here matters. What we do helps provide food for families throughout the RGV, and we want someone who takes pride in being part of that.

🐄 Work may include

• Morning and/or evening milking and dairy chores
• Feeding and caring for cows, calves and other animals
• Cleaning barns, pens and animal areas
• Operating a tractor and loader to move and load hay
• Mowing, weed-eating, landscaping and gardening
• Planting bushes, plants and maintaining outdoor areas
• Checking and repairing fences and gates
• Moving feed, hay, supplies and equipment
• General property cleanup and maintenance
• Handyman and repair work
• Basic carpentry and construction projects
• Painting, caulking and installing interior metal panels in barns and buildings
• Helping care for dogs, cats and chickens when needed
• Helping with milk deliveries if able
• Working at our different properties when needed
• Other projects that come up around a working farm

☀️ A little reality about farm work

Most of this work is outdoors in the South Texas heat.

There will be dirt, dust, flies, manure, smells and sometimes mud. Cows are cows. 😂 You need to be comfortable getting dirty and working around livestock.

Some feed, hay, equipment, supplies and building materials can also be very heavy or awkward. You must be physically capable of safely lifting, carrying, pushing and moving heavy items, including items weighing up to approximately 100 lbs when necessary.

Safety comes first. We expect anyone working with us to use equipment properly, ask for help when needed and complete work safely and correctly rather than rushing.

There are always barns to clean, things to organize, repairs to make and projects to finish.

✅ What matters most to us

• Must be 18 or older
• Must be trustworthy and dependable
• References are required
• Must have your own reliable vehicle and dependable transportation
• Able to travel between our properties when needed
• Must be able to safely operate a tractor and loader to move and load hay
• Must be able to listen carefully and follow instructions
• Uses good judgment and knows when to ask instead of guessing
• Comfortable around kids, dogs, cats, cows, calves and chickens
• Comfortable working outdoors and getting dirty
• Comfortable using basic hand and power tools
• Able to work responsibly on your own
• Communicates when something is wrong or needs attention
• Respects our animals, family, customers, equipment and property
• Takes cleanliness, sanitation and farm biosecurity seriously
• Takes pride in doing quality work even when nobody is standing there watching

We want someone who understands the difference between working efficiently and rushing. Getting things done matters, but doing them safely, correctly and with care matters just as much.

🌱 You do NOT have to know how to do everything.

Experience with cattle, milking, fencing, landscaping, gardening, construction, carpentry, metal work, repairs or handyman work is a plus. We can teach the right person our specific milking, animal-care, sanitation and biosecurity procedures.

We would much rather find someone who is honest, dependable, teachable and willing to work than someone who claims to know everything.

For the right person, there is room for additional responsibilities, additional hours and a bigger role in helping keep everything running.

🚚 Being able to help with milk deliveries is a plus.

💰 Hourly pay based on experience and skill level

📍 Los Fresnos area

🇲🇽 English is not required. Spanish-speaking applicants are absolutely welcome. Se habla español.

As long as you can understand instructions, communicate when something is wrong and perform the work safely, we are happy to communicate in Spanish.
