Happy Harvest 2026!

August has been a busy month in the cellar. Harvest began with Sauvignon Blanc on August 3rd, marking our earliest-ever start to harvest (by one day—2015 began on Aug 4th). Pinot Noir and Chardonnay started coming in by the middle of the month, joined by the first of our Grenache for Rosé.

The quality of the fruit has been exceptional so far! The “early” start date to the harvest was the result of early budbreak this past February/March, rather than a warm growing season. We still had our usual remarkably long, often cool growing season, classic for Santa Barbara County. Tropical influences brought higher than usual humidity, some warmer than usual nights in July and August, but high temperatures have remained near historic averages.

With roughly 80% of our fruit in house, we have been busy on the sorting line, pictured here (thanks to Rincon Wine Group for the photo!).

Growing great wine takes an extraordinary amount of time and effort from a large group of people. The vineyard crews, like the amazing Radian crew pictured here, start each year with winter pruning. A bit after bud break, the young shoots are thinned by hand, and later tucked into the trellis. Each vine is carefully leafed by hand, allowing just the right amount of sunlight and shading. All the while, cover crops are managed and later mowed and/or tilled. And the vines are sprayed to protect from mildew. And the weeds under the vine (no use of herbicides here!) are painstakingly weed-whacked and hand shoveled.

After a long growing season (over six months in most vintages, including 2026), the crew harvests the grapes.

The day of harvest is like the birthday for the grapes, the culmination of all that time and effort.
