Great morning hike in the SRH last week! We are thrilled to be working with a spectacular block of Chardonnay at Donnachadh Vineyard. Thanks to the Duncan family for sharing that magical fruit, and to Sam for the comprehensive tour. The photo doesn’t capture just how steep the hillside blocks are, as the vines cling to the rocky slopes.

Walking vineyards is a great way to start the day! Took a stroll around Vogelzang and Grassini vineyards checking in on Spring growth.

Compared to other varieties and appellations in Santa Barbara, Sauvignon Blanc in Happy Canyon tends to have later budbreak (due to the cold nights, and cooler winter temps).

After about a month of growth, the vines are progressing nicely with slow, steady shoot growth and a nice potential crop.

One of the most fascinating things about wine is that no two vintages are ever the same. Every growing season features a myriad of different factors, from rainfall amounts to temperature fluctuations.

This duo photo shows the exact same block of Pinot Noir, and illustrates the significant differences already emerging between 2025 and 2026.

2025 featured an incredibly cool (make that cold) Spring which slowed shoot growth. In sharp contrast, 2026 has started with a warm winter (resulting in earlier budbreak) and quite warm (so far) Spring. As of the last days of March, we are seeing larger, stronger shoots than we did a full two months later last year.

It’s far too early to predict what sort of weather and growth patterns we will see over the remainder of the growing season, but it’s off to a strong start. Vines are happy!

Greetings Everyone!

We are excited to release the last and longest lived of our Pinot Noirs from 2023. 2023 was a terrific vintage, basically, cool and long with Pinot Noir picks spaced out over a long 6 week period. During September and October John & Brandon are constantly heading out on Santa Rosa Road to check on the fruit and vine condition in each block and to pull cluster samples to evaluate back at the winery. We are in constant communication with our terrific vineyard managers regarding pick dates, and often we are able to pick the grapes within literally hours of our last sample. In 2023, with no severe weather to work around, we were able to dial in each pick at almost perfect timing. The grapes had phenolic and sugar ripeness, with sufficient balancing acidity even after a long season’s effort working on the vine. This is another testament to the climactic uniqueness of Sta. Rita Hills, with its famed refrigerated sunlight that promotes photosynthesis on a measured scale.

In addition, please see some other 2023 Pinot Noirs which are available and which are really showing the promise of 2023. After almost a year in bottle, they display youthful energy, with increasing complexity and expressiveness. The critics agree, so go online and grab several of your favorites!
