Just a little PSA for anyone buying ducks 🦆

Only male ducks (drakes) develop a drake curl. That little curled feather on the tail is one of the easiest ways to identify a mature male.

So if someone is selling ducks and claiming they “don’t know the genders,” but you can clearly see a drake curl on one of them… personally, I would steer away. 🚩

There’s a difference between genuinely not being able to s*x a young duck yet and advertising mature birds as unknown gender when there are obvious signs telling you otherwise.

Always do your own research before buying and know what you’re looking for! 🤍

Let's talk chicken/bunny bedding.

What are we using? I've been using straw but I hate it. 🙃 I've thought about h**p or coffee grounds, but coffee grounds is probably too expensive. 😅

Just a quick hi from me! 👋🥰 I know I’ve been a little inactive the last few weeks. Life can get pretty busy pretty quick! We're still over here doing our thing, loving on all the chickies, and staying busy around the homestead. ❤️

🥚✨ A fun little reminder about pullet eggs... ✨🐥

Most breeders don't intentionally hatch a pullet's very first eggs, and there's a good reason why.

A pullet's first eggs are usually much smaller than normal, which often means:

• Smaller chicks • Less room for the embryo to develop • Lower hatch rates • Chicks that may be weaker or have a harder time after hatching

As the pullet matures, her eggs increase in size, and hatchability generally improves.❤️

..But every rule seems to have an exception. 🤭

Remember this tiny little fairy egg I found from one of my brand-new layers? Against the odds, I couldn't resist putting it in the incubator... and look what hatched! 🥹❤️

This little one is proof that it can happen, but it's definitely not something I'd recommend as a regular practice. Sometimes you just get lucky.
