Organic Certification Suspended by NHDAMF!

Since 2007, Red Manse Farm was Certified Organic by NHDAMF. However, due in large part to my proposed use of plastic twine in producing hay, as I have for many years in full compliance with their rules, the department made the decision to suspend my certification because it was deemed by them to no longer be acceptable in organic hay production. Never mind that the department continues to allow organic spinach in plastic bags, organic tomato seedlings in plastic trays, and plastic mulch allowed to be used in the field. No, plastic twine around a bale of hay is completely unacceptable to Director Wyman. I am satisfied being suspended under such hypocrisy. I will continue to provide my vegetables to the low income food programs I supply. Those customers appreciate my produce and do not require the State's certification to help feed at-risk populations.

Over the last few days, we made a little hay. Hay, so we're all clear, is dry plants fed to livestock. Mostly grass, but also legumes like clover and alfalfa. (And pigs DO eat it. They eat ANYTHING.) This little machine is called a 'tedder'. Yep, it 'teds' the hay, fluffing it up and throwing it around to get it to dry better and faster.

It's been nearly a year since I've posted here. But as life changes, my farm does as well. I'm back at it this year, and with no plans to offer produce retail at all. However, I have also always seen education as an important part of local farming in a state that grows so little of its food in a country so often far removed from this essential part of our lives. This short video shows 'cultivating', a specific task on a farm that uses no chemicals to kill weeds, just good ol' fashioned steel. Sweet corn here, hot peppers to left.

Help us turn Flowers into Food for Families in Need!

Join us this Monday, 8/12 at Wayfarer Coffee Roasters - Laconia, NH from 8-10am for a Flower Pop-Up Shop. In partnership with Wayfarer, $5 from the sale of every bouquet will go directly to Got Lunch Laconia

In NH, 1 in 9 individuals are food insecure. It is programs like Got Lunch! that work to ease the stress that the summer months can bring, when school breakfast and lunch programs have ended.

Please help us in supporting this incredible organization...and when you come, be sure to peek in the parking lot next door to see the army of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to make this program happen!

Bouquets are $12 each.

Looks like we will finally start picking zucchini next week! We just finished up a big cole crop planting this morning, just in time for a good soaking rain. Nearly all the open ground in the distance (all the way to the truck seen just above the hay rake,) is cabbage, with a little Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower thrown in (you can’t see the individual plants at this distance.) In the past, we would have up to 5 succession plantings of cole crops in order to have broccoli, kale, and the like over as long a season as we could, but with the end of the CSA, that is no longer crucial. We had real difficulty with flea beetle in those crops last year; there was little we could do as the insects moved from one decimated planting into the next newly planted areas. So, we skipped the early plantings this year, putting all our “eggs” into this one large basket. I’ll tell you how it goes...
