ceeds from Dinner in the Meadow support a small farm owner selected by the Fund. The Fund was established to honor the memory of two extraordinary North Carolina farmers:

Marjorie Leonard
October 28, 1921 – March 17, 2012
Marjorie Louise Gardner Leonard loved the land of her family farm and the good life it provided. The first girl in her family to attend college, she went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in home economics and science from East Carolina University and a master’s degree from UNC-Greensboro, where she also completed her PhD coursework. Her greatest love was the land and the people of her family’s farm, the Leonard Farm, an enterprise she managed and operated from 1996 until recent her death in 2012. Marjorie’s motto was “I will do my part” and her life-long goal was to learn something new everyday. She lived her values, through decades of guiding and educating others at Vance-Granville Community College, Louisburg High School, and W. Mills HighSchool; by doing the difficult and challenging work of farm life; and through commitment to the principles she believed in. Marjorie was a firm believer for equal rights for all, and she was active in her community of Mapleville and Louisburg on local issues, a pioneer who would speak up for equal pay and treatment for women in the workplace. She was active, too, in many professional organizations, serving as president and as district and state adviser for the Future Homemaker Association and as an officer in many other organizations. She loved good, fresh, local foods and supported many efforts to educate others—young and old—about the benefits and importance of naturally raised foods and local farms. Jerry Stephen Mobley
July 11, 1955 – August 21, 2013

Jerry Stephen Mobley was born in Tarboro, N.C., on July 11, 1955. He approached life as a wonderful journey, a gift worthy of study, consideration, and respect. Steve followed his bliss, and life opened its doors to him. He was an agribusinessman and owner, with his wife, of Meadow Lane Farm in Louisburg. Agriculture was the thread that ran through all his work. As a young man in 1974, he received three National AQHA All-Around honors and captured the Youth Register of Merit, riding proudly on the horse “Whit’s Lucky Bob.” A magna cm laude graduate of N.C. State University with a master’s degree in animal science from Oklahoma State, Steve went on to work for the N.C. Department of Agriculture as a livestock (equine) marketing specialist. In recent years he was dedicated to work and service at the Durham Farmers Market. He served as president of the board of directors and as a board member. He loved his customers and especially loved to encourage and guide small farmers. He was a producer and owner of champion Australian shepherd dogs, horses, beef cattle, and meat goats. Steve was a philosopher in his own right, enjoying poetry and words of wisdom. He read widely and studied N.C. history, and he took time to reflect on the world around him. An avid gardener, he took great joy in cooking and entertaining for family and friends, to whom he was devoted.

✨ Meet the Chef ✨

We’re honored to welcome Chef Tie Whittaker, the heart and talent behind Buttermilk Boutique, to Dinner in the Meadow 🌾

Chef Tie’s story begins in the kitchen with her grandmother, Angel, baking pies, breads, and cobblers that would spark a lifelong passion and a shared dream. After her grandmother’s passing, Tie made a life-changing decision: to honor her legacy through pastry. What started as love and loss became purpose, and ultimately, Buttermilk Boutique was born.

Blending Southern flavors with refined technique, Chef Tie creates luxurious, nostalgic desserts that celebrate heritage, community, and her roots. From earning her Master’s in Gastronomy at Boston University to competing on Guy's Grocery Games, her journey is as inspiring as it is impressive.

But beyond the accolades, Chef Tie’s work is about connection, bringing people together through food, memory, and tradition.

At Dinner in the Meadow, you won’t just taste dessert, you’ll experience a story of legacy, love, and the power of following your calling.

At the recent World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison, Wisconsin, their cheese "Cottonbell" earned 3rd place in the Brie category, an impressive achievement at one of the world’s most respected international cheese competitions.

And the accolades don’t stop there. Their cheese "Campo" also received recognition this past March in Food & Wine Magazine, further highlighting the craftsmanship and creativity behind their cheesemaking.

🌾 Meet the Chef: Kyle Wilkerson 🌾

Born and raised in Durham, NC, Chef Kyle Wilkerson’s love for Southern, farm-to-table cuisine began in the kitchens of his mom, Mema, Nannie, and Poppa Paul, where food meant family, tradition, and heart.

After graduating from the Culinary Arts program at Wake Technical Community College, Kyle refined his craft in some of the Piedmont’s most celebrated kitchens, including the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, Watts Grocery, and the award-winning Four Square Restaurant, where he served as Sous Chef. Along the way, his culinary creativity was also featured through recipe development and food photography for Edible Piedmont, Williams-Sonoma, House-Autry, and Tenda-Bake.

He later brought his vision to life as co-owner and Executive Chef of Heirloom: A Poppa Paul Kitchen, a pioneering farm-to-table restaurant rooted in local flavor and community.

Today, Chef Kyle is shaping the next generation of culinary talent as Program Head of the Culinary Arts Department at Vance-Granville Community College, while continuing to cater and create, keeping his passion as sharp as ever.

✨ We’re honored to have Chef Kyle bring his story, his heart, and his locally inspired cuisine to Dinner in the Meadow.

Farmers don't get snow days! Keep our farmers in mind this weekend as we experience this big (predicted) snow event. Many, if not most, of our market farmers produce crops year-round, so significant snowfall for farmers doesn't mean sledding with the kids or grandkids, or sitting by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate, or catching up on sleep. It can mean working around the clock to manually remove snow that accumulates on high tunnels, because if they don't the tunnel collapses as pictured here from a NC farm a few years ago. Keeping crops protected from temperatures in the single digits. Making sure livestock is fed and watered in spite of below freezing temperatures that make these tasks difficult. Thank our farmers, and make sure and support them at your local farmers' markets!

Happy Birthday Mr. Bob! I enjoyed stopping by the storefront recently!
