I finally caught Hazel laying an egg on camera 🥚🦆

What surprised me most wasn’t the egg—it was the little nicker she gave and how she panted afterward like she was saying, “Whew, glad that’s over!” 😂

Well… this wasn’t on my bingo card for today. 🦆🥹

A friend found this little duckling alone in a fenced backyard in a Shelbyville subdivision. After searching for hours, there was no sign of mom, siblings, or any other ducks nearby. The nearest body of water is quite a distance away, and unfortunately we’ve had no luck getting in touch with a wildlife rehabilitator who is able to take it.

For now, the little one is safe, warm, and being cared for. Thankfully, we still have our brooder setup, heating plate, and supplies from when Howard, Harley, Heidi, and Hazel were babies, so we’re equipped to provide temporary care while we figure out the best long-term solution.

At this point, our goal is still to find appropriate wildlife resources if possible. While I’m hesitant to intentionally keep and integrate a potentially wild duck into our flock, I’m also not opposed to doing what’s best for this little one if no other options are available.

Has anyone dealt with a situation like this before? Any wildlife rehabilitator recommendations, waterfowl rescues, species identification tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Nobody warns you that owning ducks means spending part of your life scrubbing p**p off eggs. 🦆🥚

Thankfully I found a better way. This little find has made egg washing so much faster and honestly kind of fun. GoodEgg Stuff

Who knew a pool deck box would make such a great duck house?! 🦆💦

One of the best upgrades we've made to our setup has been adding the automatic door. It lets the ducks out at sunrise, gives them more time to forage, and means I don't have to set an alarm just to open their house every morning. ☀️
