Georges Mill Farm Artisan Cheese

Georges Mill Farm Artisan Cheese Handmade artisan goat cheese Georges Mill Farm Artisan Cheese is a small, family owned farm in Loudoun County Virginia.

We make artisan cheese on a seasonal basis using milk from our herd of Alpine dairy goats. Our dairy is located in an historic bank barn that has been in our family for eight generations, and our goats graze over 15 acres of pasture. We supplement our pasture with high quality grain and hay, and are committed to producing cheese of the finest quality and connecting our consumers to their food. We

believe strongly in the power of real food, and in the need for a strong local agricultural economy and community. Come out and visit our farm to see what our mission is really about!

Summertime is gelato time! We make our ice cream on the farm in small batches with simple ingredients- we start with our goats milk and cane sugar, then add in Jesse Straight pastured egg yolks or our goats milk caramel and locally sourced seasonal ingredients like strawberries, peaches, and fresh mint! You can find several rotating flavors in our farm store all the time, or come see us at Takoma Park Farmers Market on Sundays 🌞

Between school events, grad parties, and other community happenings, we’ve been having a hard time scheduling a barn dance for June. So we’ve decided to think outside the box and try out a weekday barn dance on Wednesday June 24th. We’ll open the barn doors at 5pm and the dancing will start around 6pm and go til around 8pm. Joining Fiddling Kirk in the band we’ll have special guests Chris and Thomas from the local favorite all-teacher bluegrass band Karma Creak who both just finished up another year at Woodgrove High School. Come on out and give them a well deserved pat on the back and enjoy their musical stylings in the best way possible - through dance. Farmer Sam will be doing the dance calling and will be providing instruction as we go along so no experience necessary and all ages welcome. We aren’t doing any food or a potluck as we have in years past, but you are welcome to bring a picnic for yourself. $5 suggested donation goes 100% to the band.

It’s really feeling like summer this weekend, which means it’s time for the goats to head to the woods! This is their happy place since goats are browsers not grazers. Browse is more nutrient dense and higher in protein than our perennial pasture, and the shade means much less heat stress- all of which translates to better milk production and happier, healthier animals throughout our hot humid summer weather!

It’s Tomme season! As a seasonal dairy our milk chemistry changes throughout the goats lactation. Some cheeses like chèvre, and our short aged soft ripened cheeses we make all the time, but with our raw milk aged cheeses we like to match the cheese make with the season. In early spring when the goats are newly in milk and on new spring grass the slightly higher fat content and sweetness of the grass are perfect for blue and cheddar. Now we’re moving into summer and milk production has dropped into a steady level with slightly lower fat and higher protein- perfect for alpine style cheeses like Tomme and granas. That means we’ll be busy filling the cave with grey ghost and Daize rest for the next few months, capturing the flavors of summer forage so we can enjoy it in the late fall, winter, and spring 🥰

It’s a bummer for it to be soggy for the long weekend and (goats are feeling cooped up too!) but we’re grateful to be getting some much needed rain - almost 3” since Wednesday 🥳.

We’ll be at tomorrow 9-1 with the last of the ramp chèvre, plus more strawberry custard AND Lovettsville cheddar is back. Farmers show up at market rain or shine so we are super grateful when our customers do too, grab an umbrella and come out and see us tomorrow!

Cheese on cheese on cheese! We are a seasonal dairy and right now is peak milk production time- which means it’s also peak cheesemaking time. We are processing about 220 gallons a week into cheese, gelato, fudge, and caramel.

What you see here is a chèvre draining, recently salted lactic bloomy rinds drying, and a batch of Millstone draining
