This year afforded us lots of time to farm. I added a new garden. Chances were in the early summer, if you ordered eggs, you got free squash! It was a bumper crop year! I still have a tomato hedge and my kale keeps trucking in spite of the cabbage loopers. My herbs also have gone crazy and I have my pot rack set to drying bundles of them.
We also built a peahaven as we like to call it. The pea fowl now have a cosy coop and run to keep them safe. Maxine has a new boyfriend we named Oberon and two young chicks who she is puzzled by. Like, who left their kids here?
We had a friend hatch out a couple of batches of our chicken eggs and have been watching the latest batch grow. This year we learned that foxes can jump over the electric fence! I now never forget to lock everyone up for the night. It was a hard lesson.
Now I am thinking of what to plant for the fall and winter as I play Jenga on my counter with all the cartons of eggs we have.

The farm is getting ready for winter, but that means the chickens want to snuggle with you :) Here is Grau with her boy.

Spring update! The temperatures are up and so is egg production! We got 18 eggs yesterday! I think that’s every hen. (It’s been a while since I’ve counted.) The peabs are out and I’ve reclaimed my tack room and cleaned it out. Barring any disasters I am not intending to raise chicks this year no matter how much my child whines when we go to southern states 😂. The only real hard loss early this year was RP. His nosy beak is so missed around the house. We hope that Maxine and Blizzy become just as nosy with time. Right now, they are exploring their outside world and I try not to worry that they will do something stupid. The foxes are still about.

This spring has been a trying one. We had a massacre around Easter that required us to try to outfox the predators. We’ve built a more secure fortress and made sure that nothing could easily get over or under the electric fencing. We do have 11 hens a-laying and about 2 dozen chicks nearly ready to go outside. RP, the peacock loves to oversee the young ones and makes sure they don’t get into trouble. He really is a neat bird.
