With a short torso and long legs I have always been good at keeping my weight directly under me within my hips. What I find so interesting about this is that you see this comparison every day in the horse industry between disciplines. I think a huge example is taking reining and comparing to saddle seat. I always struggled with saddle seat as it was harder for me to get myself into a position where I looked light and effortless, but I can work a ranch horse all day long no problem. And take a look at the standard rider and you typically will see very petite women or girls competing in saddle seat vs most grown men competing in reining. The contrast being saddle seat requires an effortless forward movement vs reining being a solid heavy in the seat. I think training across them both is an essential way to improve a rider’s performance!

The difference in a person's ratio of leg length to their torso length has a profound impact on the ability to balance in the saddle. The rider on the left has legs longer than her torso length. This automatically lowers her center of balance in the saddle compared to the rider on the right who has a longer torso compared to the length of her legs, which results in the rider being "top heavy" in the saddle.

This is a simple interaction of rider body mass placement in the saddle and gravity. The longer legs place more of the rider's body mass below the saddle whereas the longer torso rider proportionally places more body mass above the saddle.

The result often is that the rider with the longer torso on the right will tend to balance more in the seat than in their legs and seat, which is a challenge. In an extreme situation a rider with a longer torso can look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy rolling around on their butt in the saddle while they constantly unbalance their horse.

When teaching riding, the instructor of a longer legged rider only needs to tell the student to relax and let the legs fall naturally down to the stirrups. However, the trainer teaching the short legged, long torso person must tell this student to balance more using their feet in the stirrups.

When I get a student with shorter legs that torso, who is top heavy in the saddle, I temporally shorten their stirrups. This places their feet closer to the stirrups. Once the stirrups are raised and are more available for the rider, students usually begin balance more using their feet in the stirrups. In time, after they are regularly using their feet to balance, I lengthen their stirrups to help them lower their center of balance.

Teaching riding is more than yelling "heels down" to a class of students. Effective teaching includes assessing how a student's body type helps or hurts their ability to balance. We need to help riding students optimize the use of their body.

Things have been a little different for me lately. I took a chance at changing my life and it’s been a rough start for sure but I’m finally getting my feet under me again. At the very start of 2026 I took a good look at where I was heading for the year and realized that I’m not going the direction I want to be anymore. I have so many plans for this year and things changed pretty drastically and fast since the very end of 2025. Beginning a new relationship I then had the opportunity to change my physical place in life. So I took a gamble, ended my lease early, and packed up all my things to move in with him. During this process I took another chance on changing my career path. After welding for 2 years now I had come to a point where I’m watching my health decline and my mental health crash. My next step was the scariest one, quitting my stable job with nothing lined up just for the sake of getting myself back again. While still scary I’m making things work and slowly getting closer to the life i genuinely wanted to live. With this I’ve been able to take the step I’ve been putting off which is trusting in myself to start my own business in the agriculture world. These next steps will be hard for me but I’m already anticipating the payoff that will be so fulfilling to me. So this is your reminder that nothing changes until you change and it’s never too late to decide what’s best for you.

I may not have all the newest shiny things in life but what I do have is something so much greater and right now more than ever I want to take the time to acknowledge this. As someone whose passion is life is animals I find it so interesting that we often forget as humans we are in fact also animals. More importantly we are sociable, pack animals who thrive in company. Why this matters so much to me is that I have one of the most incredible support systems I have ever been able to witness and am so grateful to be able to have them. At some point in my time growing up I began to believe that I was never meant to get to have the closeness of my own “pack” because I struggled with making true friends. What occurs to me now more than ever was that my support is more family than anyone I could have chosen from just a friendship. And everything I do I can do because I have them standing by me and supporting me every step of the way. These people who could have very easily just been “a friend of my parents” “my sisters friend” “a distant relative” or even just “a friend from class” and even “a first date I’m hoping goes well” and have nothing more in common at times than being the people who came into my life with no expectations of being so important to me but have every right to know that I am forever grateful to have them looking out for me now after helping take care of me to this point in my life. So to all of you who are my pack, my family, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m doing my best to make you proud.

Vegas normally handles anything I ask without hesitation, but introducing balance pads was something new. I was surprised about how unsure she was with the lack of solid ground under her feet. The video is broken down segments that show our session in small steps, progressing from avoiding the pads to standing with both front feet on them. This took all together 20 minutes!

- Here’s the step by step -

1️⃣ I started with treats and a low-pressure introduction. Letting her sniff the pads and placing treats on them helped create a positive association and build comfort.
2️⃣ Next, I used the pads to gently rub along different areas of her front end to show they wouldn’t hurt her. I also asked her to pick up and stretch her feet forward, encouraging her to shift her weight and prepare for stepping where I asked.
3️⃣ Once she was more comfortable, I asked her to place one foot against a pad. I kept a hand behind her leg to guide her and allowed time for tension release. You can see signs like licking and chewing, which show she’s thinking through the process of what I ask.
4️⃣ In the following clips, I continued asking her to apply pressure to the pads one foot at a time on both sides. She was more confident with her right foot than her left, so I made sure both sides reached the same level before progressing.
5️⃣ The next step was asking her to put weight on both pads at the same time. This was more challenging, and at one point she learned to push the pads instead of stepping on them, so I stepped in to guide her.
6️⃣ After stabilizing the pads myself, she was able to stand with both front feet on them briefly. Even though the stance was a bit awkward, it met our goal for the session.
7️⃣ We finished with treats and a relaxing break. She stayed calm throughout with relaxed expressions and sleepy eyes. While not physically demanding, this was a great mental workout for her.
