It’s the perfect snow here at the Longview farm. The wind is calm, the cattle are enjoying fresh dry hay, Charlie (the big white dog) is in his element running beside farmer Pattons tractor. The goats are staying inside the shed, while the horses just take in the beautiful snowfall. We now have 8 newborns with more expected any day.

Good morning from the Longview farm. Sunday we had the goats fiber sheared…. Here is a little sneak peek of the beginning of processing. Echo produced 8.25625lbs of raw fiber with very little vm(vegetable matter).

"There is a Key to Every Horse's Mouth"
Or
Types of Bits and When to Use Them

There three main types of bits:
1. Those that use direct pressure
2. Those that use leverage pressure
3. Those that use both

Bits can be made out of many types of materials. The most popular ones are:
1. Stainless steel
2. Copper or sweet iron
3. Blue alloy
4. Rubber
5. Plastic
6. Leather

There are different types of cheek pieces as well:
1. D-ring
2. Full check
3. Eggbutt
4. Loose-ring
5. Gag
6. Pelham
7. Kimberwick
8. Shank

There are different types of mouth pieces as well:
1. Single joint
2. Double joint
3. French link
4. Oval/Lozenge
5. Dr. Bristol
6. Dog bone
7. Mullen
8. Roller
9. Port
10. Joint port
11. Single joint
12. Double joint

Obviously between the material, cheek pieces and mouth pieces and new bits that are being developed there are any number of combinations.

In future posts I'll go into a deeper dive into each of the variables that make up a bit.

Horse Body Language: Ears!

Ears are just one way a horse communicates.

Directly forward facing ears that don't move are alert and possibly listening to something in the distance.
Ears that are forward, but turn easily and independently indicate a happy, attentive horse.
Ears drooped to the sides indicate a sleeping or very relaxed horse.
Ears slightly backwards indicate annoyance or possibly pain.
Ears flat back against the neck indicate extreme anger.

Take a look at this series of photos to see what the horses are saying with their ears.

I haven’t thought to do this before, but I like the idea! I often times wonder if that is how some of our fruit trees started at the Longview Farm.

Nice tip~
If you eat fruit, don't throw seeds and kernels in the trash. Wash and dry them. Put them in a box and put it in the car. When you're on the road, throw them through the window in places where there are no trees. Nature itself will take care of them. Or throw it out during a walk or bike ride. This practice has been around for centuries in Asian countries. That is why their fruits are now growing everywhere. I would like to add that I have seen a similar phenomenon in Slovenia. While walking through the forest on the slope of the mountain around the city, I was surprised to find apple trees, apricots, plums and pears growing in the forest. Just pull and eat as much as you want.

Make sure you only plant native seeds!
