It's that time year I like to share ways to improve your yield, this particular animal was hung by the head after harvest and as you can see the blood doesn't drain out; it settles between the hide and leg muscles and makes quite a mess of the meat leaving lots of blood clots and a lot of trimming is needed reducing the yield. It's always best to hang them by the back legs unless it is going to be a mount. We've also noticed that canines have helped themselves to the leg meat when they hung by the head and hung to close to the ground.

Just recently we received a large bear in for processing. Much to our disappointment the meat was riddled with lead pellets and was not salvageable. It's sad to have had animal harvested and see the meat wasted. Moral to this problem, take those bird feeders down, compost correctly and support houndsmen as this actually keeps the bears fearful. We live in their territory.

I wanted to create a before and after post to show hunters what we see once the hide is removed. So often we will get asked how much meat did I get and my response is how many time did you shoot it? Every hit creates loss and maybe burger. Often times if the stomach is hit and the animal runs the stomach content will seap into the body cavity between the shoulder blade and the body. I often call Steve a magician as you can see in the after photos. Hopefully our hunters can find this information helpful.
