I know a lot of people don't like to see roosters butchered, but we farm dual purpose heritage breed chickens so that we can feed our family with the meat and eggs and know where our food comes from.

Our roosters free ranged for much of the summer and had a pretty posh life, and then one bad moment and it's over. We feel better about this than eating commercially produced chicken and/or production meat birds (like Cornish Cross) that get so fat by 6 weeks their legs buckle and their hearts explode. So...while I did not enjoy this process much, it is better than the alternatives if we choose to eat meat.

We put up about 70lbs of chicken today, and will do another batch tomorrow...

This little guy was completely camouflaged in the leaves I was sweeping off the slab yesterday. We rescued him though and he is happy in the woods again!
