We have been selling lambs to individuals and farmers markets for 15 years. We go to Logansport, Culver, Rochester, and Knox markets, depending on meat and help availability. Crossroad Farm was established in 1992 by a third generation sheep farmer. We brought with us a small herd that Rick had split with his father. We have been improving our herd with better breeding for meat and resilience sinc
e that time. Our sheep are bred and born here in a barn that was built in the mid-1800's. Starting from birth of the lamb, it gets its nutrition from its mother. It has access to hay from day one and learns to start eating it from its mother. The hay that we feed our sheep is half alfalfa and half grass hay. It hasn't been sprayed with herbicides or pesticides. The mother ewe is given some grain to increase milk production, which is especially good in the case of twins or triplets. As the lambs get older and closer to weaning time, they get grain to replace the milk they will lose. The mothers are then taken to one of the rented pastures for the grass season, which is usually late spring until fall. They won't get grain until they come back home in the late fall. She will then be rotated during the season to various pastures. These pastures are also free of chemicals. The replacement ewe lambs are separated from the rest of the lambs. The replacement ewe lambs are put on pasture with minimal supplementation of grain, depending on how well the grass holds out for the season. The rest of the lambs are kept at home on full pasture and given some grain for faster growth and milder meat flavor. These lambs are what we sell today. We think that you will enjoy the tenderness and mild flavor of our lambs.
