Blue, Black & Splash: how the blue gene works 💙🖤🤍
Ever wonder why two blue chickens can hatch a black chick and a splash chick? It comes down to one gene, and it's an incomplete dominant, meaning one copy and two copies look different:
🖤 Black: no copies of the blue gene
💙 Blue: one copy, which dilutes the black to that soft slate blue
🤍 Splash: two copies, which dilute it even further to a pale, speckled look
Because blue birds carry only one copy, they don't "breed true." Here's what to expect from each pairing:
Blue × Blue = 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash
Blue × Black = 50% blue, 50% black
Blue × Splash = 50% blue, 50% splash
Black × Splash = 100% blue!
Splash × Splash = 100% splash
So if you're hatching our Silverudd's Blue eggs and get a mix of colors, nothing's wrong. That's just the blue gene doing its thing! 🐣

Winnie’s nightly routine that has become mine now.😂
This is one of Ninnie and Joey’s babies I’m keeping.
Her and I have become buds. She comes running to see me and lets me pick her right up. We also do this every night so we’re besties right?!🤷‍♀️
She’s not interested in roosting up with the flock because she’s the new kid on the block.😜
