I don’t know it all and hope we all feel that way! If you have and sell “chicken” items feel free to show us! Susan Staff
Staff’s Hmong/Cemani Chickens – Established hatch dates May 7, 2020 and June 8, 2020
Hmong- Thailand’s qaib xiau nqaij – Meaning: blue chicken meat. Cherished for their believed healing properties. Known to have either a pea or straight comb. Colors can be ginger, gold, whea
ten, blue, exquisite reds, solid black, white; any color pattern. Amazing lacing, and they are fibromelanistic with dark blue to black meat too! Most households in Thailand that own a Hmtrong chicken consider it to be the pride of the family. They are heirlooms. Seldom released or sold out of the family. To own one is part of their pride, joy, and heritage. Ayam Cemani – Hyperpigmentation, fibromelanosis. Black meat, black tongue, comb, wattles, bones, organs, and black plumage with a green rainbow iridescence. Cemani – From the island of Java in Indonesia meaning “total black.”
Legend says keeping the Cemani brings luck , wisdom, healing, and fortune. One of the most beautiful stories says a young man playing on sacred grounds heard a whisper of how to heal by treating a sick son with a black chicken. While this worked . . . how? The process is not clear, but the Illness was cured and the Cemani chicken was honored as a symbol of healing. Today the breed is still honored. The meat is high in iron and used as the first meal for new mother to bless her, and to bring good fortune to laboring mothers. Said to ease your conscience , reverse bad luck, and bring good fortune. However, if a black hen crows, it is said to bring misfortune. And if you fight with an all-black cockerel and he dies, the owner of the bird will also die. Cemanis lay the most beautiful tan, almost pink eggs. The color contrast of the pearl pink heather egg against the iridescent onyx feathers is a show to see. Staff’s flock is a line of black and gold Hmong that has been bred with Ayam Cemani for many years. The goal of the breeder was healthy, beautiful fibromelanistic birds with lovely feather patterns! Its by choice that these two breeds were chosen. Now the line has been established, and after many years the birds are especially beautiful. We added pure Black Ameracuna to our flock hatch date May 10, 2021 NPIP certified from award winning stock. We also added two black silkie hens. As a test to see how things would go we had babies from our Ayam Cemani Rooster and black silkie hens. They hatched In April 2021. The flock is growing but we keep a black flock! We are looking forward to blue eggs from the Ameracuna this fall!
