A story from the bee yard:
We caught a swarm!! Of our own bees... 😑 but still. Yay! I was foraging for art supplies this morning and heard some extra buzzing. If you've ever heard bees swarm, its an unmistakable sound.... I looked up and a cluster was forming above me on a tree branch. They were actually within reach, and just starting to gather. When bees swarm, the queen leaves the hive and they follow. She usually lands close by the yard until the others find her. Then they relocate. Ours completed this mission in 15 minutes last year. Time was short.... I sent mom a text: "SWARM" and ran to the house. Geared up, went down stairs to our equipment storage, grabbed our 7 frame hive and ran to back out to the bees. (If you have met me or seen me, I'm not built to run. My body is reminding me of that now.) I grabbed the 10 foot ladder and hauled it over to the tree. I crammed the ladder in the dead trees and brush to reach the cluster. I grabbed handfuls of bees, placing them on a frame and escorted them down the ladder and into the hive box. 3 or 4 times. The idea was to get the queen in the hive and the colony will stay with her. Soon they formed a cluster inside the box indicating she was there. The rest of the colony was still in route to the tree. So.... I heaved the whole hive on top of the ladder where I knew the others would fan the queen's pheromones outside of the box to unite the colony. Success. Within 10 minutes the rest of the swarm entered the box. I turned with the hive in my arms and began my decent down the ladder. The dead tree limb that was holding the ladder in place broke, and I went plummeting forward to the ground. Bees. Hive. Me. Sting up the sleeve........ Y'all--- I kept those suckers upright and landed it gently to the ground like a drunk dude who doesnt spill his beer when falling at a frat party. Stunned that we finally completed our first "successful" swarm capture we had a quick meeting to decide what to do next. I took the stinger out of my arm and we chose to do some emergency, unplanned inspections. First hive, we found queen cells to replace the queen who left in the swarm. We kept them intact with hopes for a new, future matriarch. 2nd hive.... what's that the noise....? I looked over and the hive next to it was starting to swarm. ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?! I opened the box and started looking for the queen. I remembered my mentor telling me a story that he intercepted one while in pre-swarm configuration, and knew it was really my only hope. Frame 1, nope. Frame 2, nope. Frame 3... fast moving, white dot, top of the frame.... up, up, and away. She left with a trail of my profanities following close behind... we finished the inspections, set up a swarm trap, threw some holy water on it (jk- lemongrass oil actually attracts them) and hobbled back to the house- Hot, sweaty, stung and hurtin. Stay tuned for the next chapter of "Stories from the bee yard." Happy monday y'all.
