Guided Goat Grazing. FlockWorks began in 2013 when we began using goats to clear our own land. In the years that followed things were very difficult.

We use entertaining, adorable goats to clear overgrown land and manage unwanted vegetation of all types... from poison ivy to invasive species. Utilizing cute, cuddly goats we are able to offer services to landowners of all types that can assist at bring their overgrown vegetation under control. While it's true that goats are famous for eating a very wide variety of plants, they do not eat everything. When needed, we work with the goats to help clear the woody material that goats cannot eat and the few plants that goats

OUR STORY:

The great recession deeply affected our fledgling business and our family's personal finances. Grass was not able to be cut. Already rural property was quickly turning into something more closely resembling jungle. We have found that goats can recover overgrown land and work for you

BUSINESS NAME:

As locals may have guessed, the FlockWorks name is a bit of an throw-back to FlameWorks, our fireplace company. But a deeper reason that the name FlockWorks name was chosen is that we are have plans to work with additional animals and birds to aid property owners in their quest to improve their property. Although the word "herd" most commonly refers to birds, it can also apply to goats, sheep and even alpacas and pigs.

FlockWorks uses technology to partially replace onsite herdsmen. Not that no one is ever there, but our goats work mostly unattended 24/7/365. Our goats workers are more productive than humans doing hand work and they work for less than 13 CENTS an hour!

Of course there are other costs, but goats often are not just the best choice environmentally, but from a safety and productive standpoint as well. They are also very often the most economical choice.

Your literal last chance to visit the goats is from now until this evening, sometime after dark.

They’re heading to a personal residence in Shippensburg and are not expected to be back in public spaces in town until next year.

The benches are in the shade and the goats are just as cute as ever.

Where’s the herd?

Last expected Rail Trail update.

Will be loading the goats this morning taking them to their next spot in town.

This process can be extremely quick but it can also take hours. We're expecting to begin around 8:30.

There's been a shift of plans.

We are moving the herd back across King Street and then back into the area between the pavilion and bike park before they load up for their next job.

If you'd like to watch or participate, we expect this to be around 10:30 this morning.

Last day for visiting the herd!

(Lots of details here for those that love the goats, if that's you, read the whole post)

The FlockWorks Goats will be leaving the Rail Trail late tonight or Saturday morning.

They are going to be noisy today. For the record, they were completely satisfied last night and were delivered their preferred forage this morning in the form of hand selected cuttings.

Please continue to follow the rules and do not feed the goats anything over the fence or throw anything to them! This includes vegetation cuttings.

As many know, we attempt to have at least one "Meet & Bleat" event at every public project. This is where people have the opportunity to spend time directly with the herd and potentially interact with them. We could not coordinate that this year due to various factors, mostly how quickly the herd is going through each section.

This afternoon we will have a (somewhat) similar opportunity. From approximately 4pm to 5pm we will be cutting low branches for the herd. Even when the goats are completely satiated, this creates a circus like atmosphere that most people find enjoyable to watch.

We are also making the opportunity available for people to step in with the herd for a portion of the time (probably the second half) when we are feeding the branches. For people that follow directions and are properly prepared, you may have the opportunity to hand feed some of the goats.

We are NOT posting this asking for assistance in way that you may think. This is actually more challenging to manage than doing it ourselves. We simply want to give people that have been asking about Meet & Bleat to have a chance at a similar experience.

This is absolutely not for everyone! Just like always, the goats are very likely covered with poison ivy oil, likely to step on your feet, likely to get you dirty, etc.
