FarmHer Rachel is very excited to announce that she have been selected as a fellow in the upcoming LEAD MD cohort!

I have been waiting 7 years for the right time to apply and was selected to interview for this incredible opportunity, so the stars aligning this year feels a little extra special. ✨ I am beyond thrilled to have been accepted and cannot wait to see where this program takes me (literally, we get to travel all over to MD farms), to learn from my classmates about their experience in agriculture, and to develop my skills for become a future leader in our State’s number 1 industry!

Want to fill your freezer with local woodland-raised pork? We have you covered!

Ordering a whole or half hog is a great way to purchase meat in bulk while supporting your local farmer. Achterberg Acres has up to six hogs available that can be purchased whole or by the half. The price includes USDA processing, packaging, and delivery to your home (if desired). You get to choose your cuts, size of cuts/roasts, and sausage flavors. Don't worry if this is new to you, you’ll be able to chat with Farmer Ryan or Rachel to decide what works best for your household!

Custom pork costs $5 per pound hanging weight for a whole and $5.50 for a half. Pork deposits are $250. Average hanging weight is around 180 lbs. This is a 20%-40% savings if you typically purchase meat by the cut.

Deadline to order is Nov. 30, and we can only guarantee orders when a deposit is made, first come first serve. Email, text, or call us if you have any questions.

Extra! Extra! 📰

We will have a handful of dozens of eggs at the today! I do not believe in supplemental light for chickens so our girlie-pops naturally slow down and take a much deserved break from laying every-ish day during the winter. Our colorful layers are known to lay even fewer per year than the traditional commercial layer, so you will notice even less of those in your dozens! Get them while they last 🥚

*Did you know!?*

Seeds do not actually expire! The dates on the back of a packet of seeds are mostly for the sellers. Seeds will germinate for many years to come if they are stored properly. 🤗 End of season big box, yard sales, and your granny’s community are the best places to get started! Seriously- don’t spend hundreds on seeds if you can’t. Those seeds will grow and grow you food!

Story time:

I have been a collector of stuff for most of my life, but did not start collecting seeds until my grandfather passed when I was a young adult. He lived a life that I aspire to live up to one day and is one of the inspirations behind our farm. After he passed, someone in the fam found a small envelope of seeds he had purchased that year and gifted it to me as the family gardener. I kept them for nostalgia (obvi). And so the collection began!

Recently I added to my collection from a lovely gentleman who passed away in our community. I do not know his name and I do not know his story. But I do know that these seeds will live on for a few more years and be grown with love in a garden. This container was $2 at an estate sale and has the capability to grow pounds and pounds of food in the future!

Now - I have hundreds of seeds collected and gifted to me from all over the world 🤩. I have MD natives, vegetables, trees, grasses, and so much more. Sometimes I plant them to see if they germinate. Sometimes I share them with people when I have an abundance. But one thing I can promise you is that I’ll have seeds and if you want - I can teach you how to grow them.
