The homestead feels a little more complete today. We brought home 25 adult quail, and it’s good to have that familiar chatter back on the property again.
The kids are already having a blast with them—there is something about their size and the way they move that just makes everyone smile. They’ve already made themselves at home, and we even found our first little speckled egg this afternoon.
It’s been a while since we’ve had them around, but I’ve missed having these eggs in the kitchen. They might be tiny, but they are absolute nutritional powerhouses, packed with way more protein and healthy fats than you’d expect for their size.
It’s good to be back in the swing of things with these birds. 🌿🧺

It feels good to start filling baskets again.
Winter was long, but the garden is finally starting to give back. This afternoon’s harvest was a bit of everything: curly kale, spinach, and some French breakfast radishes that were finally ready to pull. We also gathered enough lemon balm, thyme, oregano, and mint to start drying again, plus some mugwort and a few wine cap mushrooms.
The egg basket is looking a lot more colorful lately, too. If you look closely, you can see the first tiny quail egg from our new birds tucked in there with the rest.
It’s a small start, but it’s the beginning of a lot of good meals and lessons to come. 🌿🧺

Today was one of those full, beautiful homestead days that just reminds us why we do what we do.
We took a peaceful drive through the countryside out to the Mennonite farm and store and came home with quite the new additions—10 gorgeous laying hens (who even gifted us eggs on the ride home), 2 sweet little Polish hens, and 3 darling girl ducks. Along with them came a big haul of veggie starts, herbs, berry plants, and a variety of fresh vegetables. We also picked up herbal salves, jams, cookies, tallow, greens, and so many nourishing farm goods.
We stopped for lunch at Countryside Restaurant—one of our favorite places to eat when we’re out that way—before heading back home to get everyone settled in.
And because we can’t resist a good nursery stop, we swung by Tater Valley Nursery and left with yet another cart full of vegetable, herb, and flower plants.
Back at the homestead, everything is starting to feel like abundance in motion. The perennials are already waking up with berries, fruits, greens, herbs, mushrooms and edible flowers everywhere you look. It’s honestly incredible watching it all come alive again while also seeing all the plants we started from seed indoors on our grow shelves thriving and ready to go out into the soil alongside everything we just brought home.
Now comes the part we love most—getting everything into the ground and watching it all grow. There’s a lot of excitement here for the season ahead. 😁 💚🌿🌱

There is a quiet, heavy magic in a full egg basket.
Spring always brings this specific kind of abundance back to the house—all those muted blues, creams, and deep earthy browns huddled together in the weave of the wood. It’s one of those parts of homestead life that never really gets old, no matter how many times you carry them in.
For the kiddos, it’s more than just a chore; it’s the physical weight of what it means to tend to something. It’s a bit of grit, a lot of gratitude, and the best kind of hands on learning there is. Just simple, honest work that ends with a full kitchen and a grounded heart.

We’ve had a big stretch of baby bunnies being born here lately 🐇
Every day brings new nests, new tiny fluffs, and a lot of quiet checking in on mamas and kits. The rabbitry has definitely been keeping us on our toes.
Lots of life, lots of work, and a whole lot of small ears and twitching noses right now.
