I can say with certainty, that the happiest critters on my homestead with all this rain are the 2,500 red wigglers (worms) that got delivered today! I put them right into my vermicompositing bins with some fresh bedding, worm food and compost.

Do your thing little ones!

Part 4: And off it went!

This is the only speed I’ve ever seen these snakes go. They’re certainly no black racers.

Snake saga Part 2: Just happened to be standing at the kitchen sink when I noticed my new little friend was headed into the Quail Cottage. Two concerns:
* i have snap traps in there for the rats (traps have been empty for over a week now, but I was afraid that it would trigger one since both have been “used” recently
* I have 1 wk old jumbos out there in a brooder, and the brooder has a little hole in the back big enough for a power cord…and a snake!

Had a little helper with the quail chores this evening. Only took me about 45min of milling about to even notice it chilling there, but I’m happy he’s comfortable! He’s probably the reason why my rat traps have been empty this week, whereas I had eliminated 7 the week prior. I have one HUGE rat that’s eluded me, and Dottie has chased it out of hiding twice (last time it practically ran over my feet on its way into my big shed )

So any good snake that cares to hang out by my back door is more than welcome - as long as it doesn’t mess with my “littles” (toy poodles).
