My sweet, old Thelma, I’m going to miss her so much. She knew it was time to leave us overnight last night, at the ripe old age of 12.
She went exactly as I expected she would - doing great with no signs of slowing down and then all of a sudden, boom, I’d find her the next morning.
It doesn’t mean it was any easier, though. It was such a sad morning for all of us. I had been preparing myself she could go anytime, since she was getting as old as she was. But it still hit HARD. This goat was one of my originals - she got me into them. She moved with us to our current home and even saw my son be born. She’s been with me through the good days and the bad days of farming. She’s taught me SO much.
She was the sweetest goat and always kept the herd managed. They all seemed to look at her as the wise old grandmother. She would break up head butts that would go too far and calm the heads of the herd. Not a single one of them ever messed with Thelma!
The rest of the herd is in mourning along with me.
I’m thankful she went out on her own terms and it was quick. But as much as I knew it would one day come, I still wish it hadn’t.
Here’s to Thelma and all that she’s done to teach me about animal husbandry.
