Preacher's Pick here! I can't believe that we have been back in the Lynchburg area for over almost three years and tonight, for the first time, we had steaks at Bulls Steakhouse on Graves MIll Road. To say I was impressed would be an understatement! And did you know there was an early ownership connection between the Crown Sterling and Bulls?
Ok, Let's start with the service. They asked for our drink order and brought them promptly just as we were being seated. Then the server made sure our drinks were refilled. And as we finished our meals, one of the owners came by to check on us. That's a great touch! Let's get to the steaks!
My wife and I had the 10 oz. Ribeye, which was closer to 12 ounces. I like mine medium rare and it was cooked perfectly! The steak was tender, juicy and had a great grilled taste. My wife likes hers medium well and many places mess that up by overcooking it, but hers was just right tonight. The price for the 10 oz. Ribeye was $33.00, which is less than any other good quality local steakhouse. Please note that their website shows a price of $31.00, so it needs to be updated, like just about everyone else's website these days!
One of our friends got the 8 oz. Filet Mignon and she said that hers was great. Our other friend got a 12 oz. Prime Rib. (He ordered 2 extra ounces as the menu shows a 10 oz. The base price is $33.00, and there is an additional charge of $1.50 an ounce for anything over 10 oz.
As you can see from the pic, his prime rib looked superb! Like all the other steaks, it was cooked to perfection. They also pay attention to a little detail that many steakhouses misss. Bulls had both raw prepared horseradish and horseradish sauce. I like to use both on my steak.
I'd also like to make a comment about the salad, baked potato, and rolls.
The side salad includes shredded lettuce, tomato, cukes, grated cheese, almonds, and croutons. The shredded lettuce really makes this salad! I ordered ranch dressing with mine and they don't skimp on the dressing either. they serve it on the side.
My potato was cooked perfectly. It was piping hot, flaky, and the butter just slid into the potato as it quickly melted. And of course, I must have my sour cream to go along with it.
Now let's get to the bread. You don't see bread like this anymore at restaurants. They serve a hot crusty roll, which is very soft inside, which goes nicely with the steak and salad. Now, don't get me wrong, I still love the homemade yeast rolls at New London Steakhouse, but these are a close second.
Let me highly recommend Bulls Steakhouse for your next "Steak out" meal. Tell them that "Preacher's Pick" sent ya'! Blessings! (See notes below beneath pics.)

Since moving back to the Lynchburg area, we’ve only been to Ledo’s on old Grace Mill Road one time. When we left Lynchburg in 1985 that restaurant was the location of Sashiko’s. A lot changes in an area when you’ve been gone 38 years. Even in Lynchburg!
A group of us went there on Wednesday evening and had a great meal.
I ordered their buffalo wings, which were huge, and cost $10.49. They were very filling! The heat factor was spot on. I also got a side salad. The side salad was meticulously made, and quite large. It cost $5.99. I got ranch dressing on the side and they surely don’t skimp on the dressing.
My wife got the fried chicken salad, which she said was also very good. It had a variety of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers in it as well as a good amount of cheese. It also had a good amount of fried chicken on it as you can see in the picture.
One of our friends got the South Street cheesesteak, which was a good deal at $10.99. It also had plenty of shaved steak on it.
Another friend got the Athena salad, which is basically a Greek salad. It cost $10.49 and was full of romaine, tomatoes, banana peppers, and feta cheese. The salad was big, with a good amount of grilled chicken. It was served with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I think that’s what I will get on my next visit.
One of the guys with us got the Chicken Alfredo broccoli, which was $12.99. He’s tried dishes all over the world and he said it was very good. You can tell from the picture that it had the right mixture of fettuccine, sauce, broccoli, and grilled chicken.
We will definitely return to Ledo’s soon. Go check them out and tell them “Preacher’s Pick” sent you! Blessings!

Preacher’s Pick here! Hey folks! There’s mozzarella sticks and then there’s Vitale’s Pizza Kitchen Mozzarella Sticks! Wow!! If you’ve never had their mozzarella sticks you gotta try them! They were super crispy toasty crunchy on the outside, and stretchy cheesy molten goodness on the inside. See photos below.
These sticks are also huge! How could they get any better? Here’s how, dunk these “chunkers” in the warm marinara sauce provided and you’ve got, not just a home run, but a GRAND SLAM!! Their marinara sauce is the best I’ve ever had, and we’ve had it at several of the best Italian joints in Brooklyn. Go grab you some mozzarella sticks at Vitale’s and tell them that Preacher’s Pick sent ya! Blessings!

Preacher’s Pick Here! This past week on our week one, Onion Ring Challenge, we visited Shaker’s, Corner Burger, and Gunny’s Tavern to try their onion rings. These are part of the top nine restaurants that you folks nominated for this challenge. All three of the places we visited this week serve great onion rings, although each is very different from the others. Look what we discovered and be sure to leave your comments! And follow our Preacher’s Pick FB page! Blessings!

Shaker’s - 3401 Candler’s Mountain Road, Lynchburg, VA
Price - $10.50 for an appetizer size. $6.00 if you add them as a side to your meal.
Onion Description - Thinly sliced, fresh-cut onions, that are flash-fried. It still holds most of it’s form, as it is not overcooked.
Coating – Hand breaded. Served with honey-mustard. They are just slightly oily, but not nearly as oily as the onion blossoms many steakhouses serve. The coating is also very similar to the batter on onion blossoms, however this batter seems to adhere somewhat better to the onions than it does on blossoms.
Quantity – The pic is of the $10.50 size appetizer order and it’s a LOT of onion rings. More details below.
Condiments – The onion rings are served with homemade honey mustard, which leans more toward a honey taste than a mustard taste. It’s slightly thin but tastes great with the onion rings.
Overall Taste – As stated earlier, just a tad bit oily but not too bad. They are just a tad salty, but once again, not as salty as the onion blossoms offered at steakhouses.
Observations – The amount of rings is the same, whether you order the $10.50 appetizer size, or the $6.00 side, to go with your meal. As you can see from the pic, this is a lot of onion rings to eat along with your burger, sandwich, or entrée. I would prefer a smaller amount when ordered as a side and then the added charge could be reduced to a price such at $3.00.
I would also like to see the onions sliced somewhat wider, as that would change the percentage of coating to onion, allowing more onion taste.
With all this being said, these are excellent onion rings and I highly recommend them!

Corner Burger - 1208 Perrowville Road, Forest, VA
Price – $3.00 if you order a side of Onion Rings. It’s $8.95 if you just get an appetizer order of onion rings,
Onion Description – The onions were sliced very thin, but not quite like onion straws. Most were not complete rings.
Coating – The hand breaded coating is like Shaker’s in that it resembles the batter on an onion blossom, served at steakhouses. However, this coating does not completely cover the onions fully. It’s also slightly more oily than Shaker’s, as you can see in the pic. It did have a good salt and pepper taste.
Quantity – The $8.95 order is about twice the size of a side order. This pic below is of a $3.00 side.
Condiments – The onion rings are served with Corner Sauce, which looks like honey mustard but is much more savory than honey mustard, or the sauce served at Shaker’s
Overall Taste – These rings had a good well-seasoned taste. They were a little oily, as you can see in the pic, but not too oily, at all.
Observations – If you look closely at the pic, you can see bits of batter that was cooked, not adhered to the onion. This is reminiscent of the fried fish trays that Long John Silver served that had bits of the cooked batter, (I think they called them “crispies”) beneath the fish. I would like to see these onion rings cut wider so you would get more onion taste with the batter.
They were very good and I do recommend them.

Gunny’s Tavern – 12130 E. Lynchburg Salem Turnpike Ste 3, Forest, VA
Price – $5.99 per order. $3.00 add on as a side. I ordered Chicken Tenders, which the menu said were $16.99 with fries, and it doesn’t look like they charged extra for the onion rings. The server told me that the online ordering is not functional since the business has recently changed hands, so I can’t go back and check it online.
Onion Description – The onions were sliced much more thicker than the other two restaurants.
Coating – This is a frozen product that they deep fry. They used to hand bread their beer battered onion rings on Fridays and Saturdays but are not doing that anymore. This coating was very good, but since the rings are a frozen product, the coating does tend to slip off when you bite into the onion.
Quantity – As you can seen in the pic, there is approximately 10 good sized onion rings in an order.
Condiments – The onion rings are served with Gunny sauce, which looks like Thousand Island dressing but is a lot more savory. It tastes like it is made with mayo, mustard, and some type of steak sauce, like Worcestershire sauce or A-1 Steak sauce. It also has lots of celery seeds and black pepper in it. The Gunny sauce is also slightly spicy. This stuff is addictive!! It was the best thing we tried all week! I’m sure it would be great on a burger. I actually tried to mimic the sauce in my kitchen.
Overall Taste – These onion rings have a great taste for a frozen product. There was a good onion to coating ratio, since they are cut wider.
Observations – If you are looking for basic onion rings, these are just fine. Of course, their sauce takes them over the top. It would be nice if they would bring back the homemade onion rings that they previously served. I’m sure they would be a hit, especially with that “kick’n Gunny Sauce!”

Final Thoughts – As I stated earlier, all three restaurants serve good onion rings. We really liked the seasoning of the Corner Burger onion rings. That Gunny’s sauce would even taste great on an old truck recap tire! However, the Preacher’s Pick for week one of our Onion Ring Challenge goes to Shaker’s for their hand breaded onion rings. These were not too oily, and they held their shape, as the coating clung to the onion, even when biting into it!

Watch for our week two recap next Sunday as we visit three more of the top nine restaurants that you folks nominated. Also, don’t forget to follow our Preacher’s Pick page!

Preacher’s Pick here! There’s so much talk in the Lynchburg area about enjoying yellow relish on hot dogs, including discussions on who’s is best. We can get “supposedly” “in-house” made yellow relish at Moore’s Country Store and Texas Inn. We can also buy yellow relish made by Pride of Virginia in local grocery stores. So which yellow relish is best?
I purchased what i thought was “in-house” made relish from Texas Inn and Moore’s Country store. I also bought Pride of Virginia relish from F&L market. Then I sampled them all and this is what I discovered:
The first pic is of Moore’s and Pride of Virginia. Visually, they look absolutely identical. I believe that the Pride of Virginia’s manufactuer makes them both. The only difference was that the Moore’s Country Store had less sugar than the Pride of Virginia.
The second pic is the Pride of Virginia yellow relish and the yellow relish I purchased from the Texas Inn. There is a slight visual difference in these two. The Pride of Virginia has more red peppers than the Texas Inn relish and the Texas Inn relish is slightly more yellow. But there was a pronounced difference in taste. The Texas Inn yellow relish has slightly more of a mustard taste. The sweetness of each was pretty close to one another.
Bottom line: the Preacher’s Pick goes to the Texas Inn yellow relish! All were good, but the Texas Inn was definitely different from the other two. Enjoy it on their hot dogs or westerns. You can also buy it to take home. Blessings!

Preacher’s Pick here! Well, we happened into some more garlic knots this weeks as they they were served with our meal at Lori’s in Forest.
These were hot and pillowy soft. They were addictive. With that being said, while they were quite good, we still prefer the garlic knots at Vitale’s, which had much more of a garlicky butter goodness! See pics below. But both are worth checking out! Blessings!

Preacher’s pick here! We had a treat last night at Vitale’s Pizza Kitchen. These garlic knots were absolutely great! They were soft and chewy and full of garlic buttery goodness!
This was the first time we’ve ever gotten garlic knots there, but we love their pizza. Do yourself a favor and next time you order from Vitale’s, include an order of their garlic knots. You will be glad you did! The marinara sauce is also delicious! Blessings.
