❄️ Cold Weather Care for KuneKune Pigs ❄️
With winter weather hitting harder than usual across many regions, now is the time to make a few key adjustments to keep your KuneKunes healthy, comfortable, and thriving.
Cold-Weather Essentials to Check Today:
🐖 Dry, Draft-Free Shelter
KuneKunes tolerate cold far better than wet. Make sure shelters are dry, bedded deeply with straw or shavings, and protected from wind. A simple windbreak can make a huge difference.
🌾 Increase Calories, Not Just Volume
Pigs burn more energy staying warm. Slightly increasing feed or adding safe fat sources (like soaked alfalfa pellets) can help maintain body condition.
💧 Unfrozen Water—Always
Check water sources multiple times daily. Dehydration happens quickly in cold weather.
🛏️ Extra Bedding for Warmth
Deep bedding allows pigs to nest and regulate their body temperature naturally. If you think you have enough—add more.
🐷 Watch Piglets & Seniors Closely
Piglets, older pigs, and thin animals need extra attention. Provide supplemental heat only when necessary and always safely.
