Heart of the farm. Big beets make me smile. They like the rain. It makes me feel better to love and appreciate these big beets after walking through the washed out field of fall romanesco broccoli and wondering where I should plant the rest of the fall crops. Oh geez. So much rain

Orange Cat Community Farm, an organic vegetable farm in rural Lyndon Station, received a $15,000 grant from the state to help supply vegetables to food pantries.

Orange Cat Community Farm is super excited to be participating in this project with Juneau County. The first vegetable shares go out today in Mauston. if you are Juneau County resident check this out!

We're only a few days from our first community food distribution pop up event!! We've been getting a few questions that we thought would be helpful to answer:

🍅Who is eligible to participate in the Juneau County LFPA Pop Up Events?
Anyone who is a Juneau County Resident over the age of 18 can participate!

🥕Is there an income requirement?
No! These events are open to all eligible community members regardless of income! Our goal is to connect the residents of Juneau County with access to healthy food options that are locally grown and produced combating food insecurity at the same time.

🍯What type of items will be available?
This will vary depending on the growing season and availability. In the month of May we anticipate having a variety of vegetables that our awesome farmers have been growing during the winter months. We have also partnered with local beef farms and will have frozen ground beef to give away. There will also be specialty items distributed at some pop-up events which may include items such as honey or maple syrup, however this will not be available at all events.

🥬How much will each family or individual receive?
Quantities will be distributed based on your household size and availability.

🍓Do I have to fill any information out to participate?
Yes, there will be a brief 3 question survey that participants will be asked to complete which asks:
How many individuals live in your household?
What is your age?
What part of Juneau County do you live in?
Name and address will NOT be asked of participants.

🍏How are the local growers/producers/farmers being paid?
We are very fortunate and thankful to be working with an incredible group of local farmers and producers all which will be paid for their product through the grant funding awarded to Juneau County through the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

🥒How long will this grant go?
We anticipate holding additional community pop up events throughout the county in the months of August, September, October and possibly November. Those distribution dates will be released later this summer. Continue to the follow the ADRC of Eagle Country Juneau County Office and Juneau County Land and Water for additional details.

A reminder that items will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis!

One of my favorite things about growing vegetables is all of the brilliant colors. A sub-category of my favorite colors is new baby things. Freshly emerged seedlings are often vibrantly tinged with pinks and purples, like these infant mizuna plants. Just makes me smile.

The online store is open for a March 7th delivery. Still a lot of really nice storage crops left in the coolers from our bumper 2023 season. Gotta clear it all out to make way for the 2024 bounty which we begin seeding in the greenhouse tomorrow. Yippee!!

I LOVE my annual local food fair. It is always a beautiful start to a new season. It is fun to see the faces of all my neighbors, fellow producers and customers alike. Orange Cat will be bringing carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, cabbage, leeks, purple daikon radish, onions, celeriac, and of course pickled beets. If you’ve never stopped over, I highly recommend. You’ll leave with sacks full of produce, mushrooms, grains and canned goods. Also a great time to say hello to Farmer Laura and Farmer Gali in person and chat with us about our organic vegetable CSA!

Farmer, Laura just got back from a beautiful paddling trip to Florida. First, I had to drive through a snowstorm in Ohio after presenting at the Ohio ecological farmers conference. What an awesome opportunity that was to connect with new farmers, share information and make new friends. Then onto the panhandle of Florida, where I met more beautiful friends, cute little carnivorous plants, crystal clear waters, sunshine, and frogs chirping in the pine savanna.

And now this morning— off to start the greenhouse and seed some spinach and pearl onions for the hoop house. Here we go! Again! Again! Again!!
