It’s seed cleaning time!!
Most all agriculture harvesting needs to be cleaned, but large commercial agriculture has the luxury of a combine that cleans while it harvests the crops. Native prairie producers have no such fortune. After harvest season we have 6 straight months of cleaning the various seeds we’ve cleaned.
Thankfully .gen.hunter gets it done for us.

This little guy right here is why we go out every other day for a month and hand collect Butterfly Weed…
That and the flower is beautiful. One of the only bright orange native flowers. We love it! Though at times it proves to be a pain in the butt… so much so that its nickname on our farm is “Butt milk”— a shortened version of “butterfly milkweed” for anyone who was wondering.
We get a lot of people ask if the can sell us common milkweed seeds. Sometimes we wish more people were out picking butterfly milkweed.

What’s up with Big Bluestem getting so tall??

We like to say, it’s the “apex” prairie species. It’s only regulators we’re moisture levels, fire, and Buffalo.
Without those, it is very hard to control in a field.
Mixed with Switchgrass it’s an incredible winter cover for pheasants, but beware of adding too much to your prairie mix… it can and will take over.

How do we keep it from spreading on our farm?
Tune into tomorrow Prairie Farm Podcast (link in the bio) to find out.

What. A. Day.
For starters, we joined and had four of the best gentlemen we’ve met come out and help us with hard manual labor… in over 90 degree weather.

Sharing The Land founder, , joined us as well, and he and our founder, Carroll, had a grand ol’ time connecting as two pioneers in conservation.

also joined in on the fun to film our crewfor a day. They were an amazing production team.

More updates on the project to come.

That’s a clean Sideoats Grama field…
Much cleaner than our socks after walking through and shoveling out all the Big Bluestem… yet it shows up in the field every year, and so will we.

Wild Bergamot is looking good this morning.

It’s a perfectly cool morning for weeding our fields. It took a team of 5 half a day to finish the field. All in a day’s work for conservation.

From unfinished bedrooms to fossil study rooms… and .gen.hunter have sat in some pretty unorthodox “studios”
