These commercial cross piglets are turning out amazingly well I am so thrilled with the cross these won’t do what the Idaho pasture pigs will which is not destroy your ground but they will definitely make plenty of pork chops, bacon and sausage and at the end of the day home grown meat is what we are after this litter is out of our Hereford/Hampshire/Duroc cross sow and our Idaho pasture pig IPP’s for short boar we plan to keep a couple gilts to grow the commercial side of the farm but we will have a few of these guys available soon

The last hatch of the year two little silkies and a Horsley Game bird (the chipmunk baby) as they were nicknamed many years ago by a good Facebookless friend Gayle and it kinda stuck I had sold out all my game fowl a few years ago after a relocation and just happened to get some of my bloodline back from a friend who had gotten them from the original person I sold to and was able to start over I’ve raised many beautiful birds from these lines over the years and I was thrilled with this years hatch. Now this breed might never see a show ring or win the blue ribbon prize for egg or meat production but they surpass other chickens in sustainability all the while providing a quality meat and eggs I’m hoping to expand my flock of these birds next year and then I will offer a few to people who want a bird that will practically tend itself

Idaho Pasture Pigs, Ipp's for short, are a newer breed of pig. They were designed specifically for pasture based systems. They were designed with the small farmer, homesteader and hobby farmer in mind. Through selective breeding and unique breeding, they have developed a friendly, pasture based, meat hog. They selected breeds known for excellent, red marbled meat and have thrown in an extremely gentle pig that is pasture based.
Our Idaho Pasture Pigs (Ipp's) are friendlier than domestic pigs. The sows have better dispositions at farrowing time. The boars are gentle to handle. The piglets crawl into our laps instead of being so flighty, like other domestic pigs. Ipp's reach butcher weight in the 180 days as do traditional hogs, but do not get as big at maturity. Idaho Pasture Pigs at maturity are around 350 lbs; compare that to 750 lbs on other breeds. Ipp's have short, upturned, snouts. These snouts set them apart from other breeds and allow them to graze the grass instead of rooting it up. They come in a variety of colors including red, red and black, black and white, tri-colored; ginger, and black and white. They have wattles or tassels under their chin. Very few pig breeds have the waddles a tribute to their kune kune heritage . They have great conformation, with nice well rounded hams."

Pasture pigs cost less to raise because they can forage for feed. Expensive grains and feed do not have to be purchased year round in the traditional quantities. Pasture does not typically give pigs all the nutrients that they need, but it helps to reduce the cost dramatically. The pigs get plenty of exercise, which makes for firmer pork products. Pastured pork has higher levels of vitamin E and healthier omega-3 fatty acids than traditionally raised pork. Omega-3s are considered the good fats and play an important role in every cell and system in the body. The pork has a flavor that modern pork cannot match.

Pasture based pigs are less work intensive than other pigs to raise. Pigs fertilize the pasture as they wander around. The manure is not offensive to smell and more the consistency of horse manure. Pigs on pasture are less likely to get diseases and are raised in a natural environment. If the pastures are rotated, there are fewer parasites than there would be with confinement type pigs. Before confinement type hog farms, most pigs were pasture based.
Pastures planted with quality plants like alfalfa, clover and grasses can lower grain consumption of pigs, which results in fewer costs. Good quality pasture creates a high level of reproductive capacity of boars and can increase litter sizes.
Before the 1950's and the start of confinement type farms, the majority of pigs raised were raised on pastures and allowed to forage for feed. Pasture based systems was absolutely essential in raising pigs. They needed the vitamins and proteins from the plants and the vitamin D from the sun. Then the development of providing vitamins like A and D into the feed came into play. Farmers no longer had to have pigs outside to get the vitamins from the sun and forage. Confinement type farms sprang up. Pigs were housed by the thousands in these farms and still are today. Before this happened, several studies were conducted on the best forages for swine. In all of their studies, Alfalfa is considered the best. It is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals like selenium and vitamin E. Alfalfa is rich in protein. Studies have shown that increasing fiber in sows diets, like that found in Alfalfa, have contributed to increased sow reproductive performances.
For best results, other grasses like orchard, brome, fescue, and timothy should be in the mix with the legumes. ( all borrowed information)

So now my personal views on the breed and in 3 short words WE LOVE THEM!! There is absolutely no comparison between ipp’s and the commercial breeds the commercial breeds simply can’t do what ipp’s can do period! Our sows are wonderful mothers with the very best of dispositions our boar is like a puppy in pig form 🤣 and the mere fact they turn grass and weeds into meat with very little to no grain makes them magical in my book 🤷🏼‍♂️ anyone interested in this breed feel free to contact me and if I can’t answer questions I know those who can here are a few of our herd and we have plans to add to that herd later this year

So this chunky lady is Miss Sausage Roll she is our kune kune gilt and she is the reason we needed to add in a kune kune boar so a bit about the kune kune breed. They are excellent grazers and pasture managers in places like orchards and vineyards. They also make excellent quality meat. As a heritage breed, the Kune kune meat is RED and deeply marbled, almost like fine steak. They also produce fine lard which can be used in cooking, baking and soap making.

Kune kune pigs primarily graze “for a living” which makes them a great pig breed for the homestead. You can feed your Kune kune pigs on pasture if you have a nice rich pasture year-round. It is recommended that you give some grain during the growing years.

Kunekune pigs are very docile and sweet, which makes them a great pet for first-time pig owners. They thrive on human interaction (including children) and will love spending time with their owners throughout the day relaxing and playing.
I hope this post has been both helpful and informative for those that are considering this breed just a fyi the little boar has been named Brat-wurst 🤣🤣 with luck we will be offering our first kune kune next year

So I received a rather rude message on here and I won’t call you out however calling us backyard breeders and our dogs mutts couldn’t be further from the truth our last litter of pups was born November 17th of last year those pups went to working homes as guardians WHAT THEY ARE BRED TO DO!!! Our current litter of pups are from a completely different female and just because our dogs are crosses of livestock guard dog breeds does not make them mutts I chose animals based off of their genetics and their heritages of coming from generations of working animals so yes we have some of the following breeds in our dogs Maremma, Akbash, Pyrenees, and Anatolian Shepherd each of these breeds contribute qualities from their respective purposes and they not only work for us but they also work for those who have purchased our working dogs that being said they are far from mutts if you prefer to buy pure bred dogs please feel free to do so trust me I make absolutely nothing from selling any pup and I don’t ever care if I do our dogs are absolutely essential to the success of our homestead they are worth thier weight in gold to us and that’s the only thing that matters PAPERS DON’T MAKE THE ANIMAL!! Ability does 🤷🏼‍♂️ stay blessed and have a day 🙃
