Hidden Canyon Farm

Hidden Canyon Farm Hidden Canyon Farm (HCF), owned by Steve and Sue Olson, was established in May 2006. We raise predominately Angus/Red Angus cattle with a few baldies/red necks.

We market feeder calves, heifers, bulls, and freezer beef under BQA protocols. After a long career with USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service, Steve Olson returned to up State New York to raise beef cattle after his retirement with his wife Sue and two sons (Jay and Justin). Hidden Canyon Farm (HCF) is located north of Lyons, NY between the cities of Syracuse and Rochester, NY. Hidden Canyon Farm

is blessed with excellent soils capable of yielding lush pastures, abundant hay crops and high yielding grain crops. Currently, Hidden Canyon Farm boasts one of the best commercial beef cattle herds in Western New York. The beef herd, consisting mostly Black Angus along with several Polled Hereford and Red Angus cows, yield steer and heifer calves that are fed high energy grains and hay until ready for market. Teamed with his wife Sue, Steve intends to expand production of beef for a growing local freezer trade business and to supply the Northeast Family Farm (NEFF) and the Rosenkrans Natural Beef program.

We finally finished with getting the tritical field planted for a second crop of corn. Soybeans and sweet corn in as well. Steve got the oats sprayed for weeds. Today we had a nice gentle rain which will help boost the crops and get rye growing again so we can use it as a pasture this summer. Took some pictures of the corn we put in a couple.of weeks ago before we got the 2 inch rain.

Had fun seeing Loretta and Patsy getting worked by their new owners. It was fun to see how they were handled and I am so happy with the new owners. It will be fun watching them the next month and a half. The husband and boyfriend seem to like the horses as well. I got a picture is Loretta and her new owner, Kaitlyn Shaffer. I took these today. I will get a picture of Patsy and her new owner Haley Brandstetter the next time she is out working with Patsy.

Have been a busy several days here and finally have a few minutes to share what has been happening at Hidden Canyon Farm. Last Thursday and Friday, Steve and Jay put down our 14 acres of Tritical/rye mix. Steve tedded it on Friday. Then Saturday, Jay, Justin, Shawn, and Maura got it baled, transported, and wrapped for cow chow this winter. 121 bales were made. Steve and I watched the grandkids. Sunday was kind of a rest day for Steve and I, but Justin got a couple of fields worked for planting, Jay fixed a fuel leak and other jobs. Sunday afternoon, we were going to weigh the steers, but the scale was acting up. So we did it the old fashion way and evaluated them live. Picked out the one for delivering today and we have three identified for next week's delivery. After that Maura and the girls helped me take pictures of the two horses I want to advertise for sale. Betta wanted to ride Jasmine so, we got her brushed and saddled. Maura helped her on and we did some circles. Jasmine was pretty good considering she hadn't been ridden for about 5 years. We will continue to work with her until we get something for her. My post for Monday and Today coming soon.

Yesterday and today have just flown by. Monday was running errands and getting groceries all morning. Afternoon I started cleaning out my tack room and trying organize it better. Ran Betta to meet her mom for dance. Picked up Carlee, came home and finished with the tack room. Next on the agenda is cleaning saddle and bridles. Jay and Shawn went to plant corn, Justin chiseled the tricale field and bean field. Will be planting 91 day corn in the field Wednesday. Fixed supper for Carlee and us, Maura picked up Carlee around 8:30. Today got up to do morning chores. Was counting calves on East side, I counted 8! Ivy has a nice bull calf. This is her first baby and all on her own. Just what we like. We have 3 left to calve in June and I late August calf. Steve ground feed for the steers. While Steve was grinding, I hooked up trailer and pulled it into the barn for loading the market steer later. Afterwards we sorted out the one steer and loaded it. Steve went to deliver it, while I wait for Betta's bus. Tonight is Betta's last baseball game, so we plan to go and watch.

It has been a busy day at Hidden Canyon Farm today. I was out the door by 6:30 doing my normal chores and checking cows. Went and got our helper, dropped him off at the farm and headed to our feed store. Came home and Steve and I went and picked up mineral for the cows and 3 straws of shorthorn semen to try this year. Came home and Maura and the girls were here helping with the baler. Jay raked about 14 acres of tritical. Betta went with me to put out mineral for the cows and we decided or should I say the cows encouraged us that they wanted to move to a new pasture. So we got the waterer going and checked and fixed fences. It didn't take long for the cows to come and move to the new pasture. Check out the reel when I get it posted. Moved the mineral to the new pasture. Had one calf that did not follow the herd, tried to get it out to the pasture, but barking Petie scared it. We left it in the pasture and momma will need to call it to her. We checked later and it was in with the other cows. Then Betta rode in the baler with her Dad and Carlee was hanging out in the house with GP! Got Carlee something to eat, then we went out to check bales to see if they needed wrapping. Then we went and fed the kitties and Betta came with us. We checked the cows on east and west side and did horse chores. Betta and Carlee both brushed Jasmine. Then it was supper time. We ate supper and went out to check the calf and they had almost gotten the bales off the east field, so the girls and I picked up loose hay to give the cows. After the bales were gone, we closed the gates so the cows could have access to the pastures and came in for ice cream. Now they are watching the last part of Frozen II. Bale wrapping crew have wrapped 92 bales and have 29 more to wrap. Needless to say it has been a long day for this grandma!

Hadn't seen the fox for a while, but when I opened the barn door to the horse paddock, I saw a red spot. Sure enough the fox was down by the old spring. It stayed there even when I let the horses out and with the dogs barking.
