We have some wild spring weather in Mississippi, and some years it can significantly impact local fruit production. Peaches, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and other crops are especially vulnerable to late freezes and weather extremes.

Often, farmers still have a harvest, just not as large as usual. This year, I’m hearing that some vendors are bringing in produce from other regions to help meet customer demand. There’s nothing wrong with that. We all need access to fresh food.

However, at a farmers market, transparency matters. If produce was not grown locally, it should be clearly labeled as such so consumers can make informed choices.

As shoppers, don’t be afraid to ask:
📍 Where was this grown?
📍 Is it from your farm?
📍 Was it grown locally or brought in from another region?

Obviously we will buy shipped in food we flood Walmart Kroger and Aldi’s with our presence every week or daily.

Supporting local agriculture starts with knowing where your food comes from.

What if Mississippi became known as the agricultural powerhouse of America?

With fertile soils, abundant rainfall, a long growing season, and generations of farming knowledge, our state has all the ingredients to lead the future of food production.

Imagine:
More regenerative farms rebuilding soil health
More pasture-raised livestock
More local eggs, dairy, and meat
More fruits, vegetables, and specialty crops
More young farmers returning to the land
More communities supported by local food systems

As water shortages, rising land costs, and environmental challenges affect other regions, Mississippi is uniquely positioned to grow healthy food while stewarding the land for future generations.

The question isn’t whether Mississippi can produce food.

The question is whether we are willing to invest in the farmers, ranchers, and agricultural entrepreneurs who can make it happen.

The future of American agriculture may be growing right here in Mississippi. Andy Gipson is a wise businessman and steward for recognizing it.
