♻️ Agriculture is the original upcycler. 🐄🧅

Those onions that don’t make it to the grocery store because they’re too small, oddly shaped, or have cosmetic blemishes don’t have to go to waste.

Instead, many are upcycled into nutritious feed for dairy heifers. These growing animals can turn those unused onions into healthy growth, becoming the next generation of milk-producing cows. 🥛

It’s a win for everyone:

🧅 Better use of crops
🐄 Nutritious feed for dairy heifers

🧅 Ever wonder what happens to onions that don’t make it to the grocery store?

Not every onion is “table quality.” Some are too small, misshapen, bruised, or simply don’t meet the appearance standards for retail. But that doesn’t mean they go to waste.

Many of these onions are fed to dairy cattle! 🐄🥛 They’re a nutritious source of energy and help reduce food waste by giving perfectly usable produce a second purpose.

It’s a great example of how agriculture works together—crop farmers and dairy farmers helping make the most of our resources while producing wholesome milk.

What Really Happens During Milking?

Most people picture a milking machine attached to a cow—but there’s much more to it than that.

Before a cow is milked, her udder is cleaned to help produce safe, high-quality milk. The milking equipment uses gentle vacuum pulses that mimic how a calf naturally nurses, making the process comfortable when done correctly.

Fun fact: The average cow is milked 2–3 times a day, and each milking usually takes 5-10 minutes.

So, Who Decides What Dairy Farmers Get Paid?

In my last post, I shared that dairy farmers don’t set the price of their milk.

So…who does?

The short answer is the market.

Milk prices are influenced by supply and demand, federal milk pricing formulas, dairy cooperatives and processors, and even what’s happening around the world.

Here’s something many people don’t realize:

🌎 About 17% of all U.S. milk production is exported as dairy products.

That means demand for U.S. cheese in Mexico or whey protein in Asia can influence the price a dairy farmer receives here at home.

The dairy market is bigger than any one farm.

That’s why dairy farmers focus on what they can control:

* Producing high-quality milk
* Keeping cows healthy
* Managing costs
* Planning for market swings

Because while you can’t control the market, you can prepare for it.

You Can Do Everything Right…And Still Not Control the Price

And you still don’t get to decide what you’re paid.

Most dairy farmers don’t set the price of their milk.

In fact, about 85% of the U.S. milk supply is marketed through dairy cooperatives.

That means most farmers are price takers—not price makers.

You can work harder than ever and still make less if milk prices fall.

That’s the reality of dairy farming.

Some things never stop tugging at your heart.

I’ve learned that when God plants a calling within you, it doesn’t simply disappear because life gets busy or the timing isn’t right. It waits. It gently reminds you. It keeps calling until you’re willing to trust Him enough to take the next step.

We don’t know exactly where this journey will lead, but we’re choosing to trust Him one step at a time and see where God takes us. If it’s His plan, He’ll make a way.

“If it’s your calling, it will keep calling.” 🤍🐄🌾

Why do I love being around livestock so much? I think it’s because there’s something grounding about caring for another living thing. Livestock reminds us that life doesn’t revolve around us — it follows seasons, routines, and the simple things God created.

There’s a peace that comes from being around them. It’s a place where I feel connected to God’s creation, where hard work has purpose, and where I’m reminded of the blessings we’ve been given.

They teach us patience, responsibility, and gratitude — and they remind us to slow down and appreciate the simple moments.
