The last few weeks on the farm have been super busy. We have been fertilizing and w**ding the garlic crop. Everything is growing nicely, and we are anticipating a great harvest this year.

At Red Tail Farms we raise of our crops and livestock with limited outside inputs. Our goal is to provide all the farm’s resources from the farm itself, other local farms, or trusted sustainable organic sources (until we can fully supply all our own needs).

This year the garlic was fertilized with a mixture of fish hydrolysate, liquid crab & lobster, liquid seaw**d & kelp, and liquid humate. These fertilizers provide different needs for the soil and the plants. Some may think we did this the hard way, but we essentially fertilized each plant individually with a homemade application unit using a transfer pump from a bulk mix tank. This method prevented wasted fertilizer and ensured all plants received an application.

After the fertilization we spent approx. 9 hours hand w**ding the garlic to allow the best conditions for the garlic to grow. Some growers remove the mulch from winter (turkey litter and alfalfa hay in our case), but we have determined it is better to keep the soil covered in the spring with varying temps. The mulch also remains in place as a great w**d barrier and continues to break down to add organic matter to the soil.

Next task on the farm is to harvest the garlic scapes that will be showing up in the next 1-2 weeks and continue into early June. We will have approximately 8,000-10,000 this year and would love to provide you with some. Scapes are only available in a 2–3-week window in places where there is a winter (45 days of less than 45 degrees).

This weekend we did a growth check on all the garlic. This post will be the first of many posts throughout the growing season where we are explaining the who, what, when, why, and how we grow our garlic.

March is the first opportunity we get to get out in the filed and get a realistic look at the garlic and how it is growing. We plant our garlic the end of October to the first of November. All winter we let the garlic do its thing, which is establish roots and remain dormant. By doing this the garlic can take off growing fast and strong as soon as the weather turns in the spring.

Right now, as you can see, the garlic resembles green onions. When planting the garlic cloves in the fall, the clove provides the sprouts with enough energy to get the roots established and start growing. After the roots are established, the old clove is no longer needed and will decompose off the plant. As seen in the pictures you can see the plant growing out of the clove. Once the old clove is removed we can check on the growth and ensure the plants are healthy. We look for white roots and strong leaf development.

We also did some growth comparison of the common varieties we have growing in the field and in the greenhouse.

The next step in our growing process is to fertilize and maintain w**d free growing space for the garlic.

Spring will officially be here in 1 week!

All the garlic is waking up from winter and putting on some great growth! Less than a month from our first batch of Green Garlic and 2 months until Garlic Scapes!

This Spring we are performing some experiments in the greenhouse. We added some additional garlic varieties late fall, leeks, and Vidalia Onions.

This year we plan to involve you all more by sharing who, what, when, why, and how why we grow the way we do!

2022 Garlic Planting is Complete!
This year we planted 8,875 Garlic. We added 2 varieties to the farm this year bringing the total to 4 varieties. We plan to add 1 variety each year. Be looking for Green Garlic the first week of May and Garlic Scapes the last week of May!

Our 1st Season with the Greenhouse has been going great, lots of learning!

Everything we grow at Red Tail Farms is sustainably and organically grown, using only natural fertilizers (manure, blood or bone meal, and fish hydrolysate) and natural insecticides (herb and plant essential oils) and no herbicides! We strive to produce the best quality product you can get. We have big goals for the future!
