Clean water is absolutely necessary for the health of our livestock.
In appreciation of the holiday yesterday, we thought it would be honorable to explain the connection we see between early civilization and modern problems in livestock production.
As Jared Diamond points out in his book, “Guns, Germs, and Steel,” Europeans were able to conquer the world largely because of their immunity to Western Diseases.
They gained immunity to these new diseases by living in cities without proper sewage systems, in which their drinking water was severely contaminated with human waste.
Many people died before these immunities developed.
That is why it was so common and necessary to drink alcoholic drinks at every meal back in the day. The alcohol would kill or weaken *most of the harmful bacteria in the water.
When colonialists from these areas came to indigenous lands, the indigineous peoples’ immune systems had never seen the extremely mutated and harmful bacterias developed in those cities and could not fight them off.
When any animal lives in and amongst its own f***s, diseases are created that are indefensible to their system, where illness and/or death is likely.
Modern medicine has the ability to assist in defending these illnesses, and is why we see such heavy use of them in modern agriculture.
We choose to address the cause of these issues instead of the symptoms.
Contaminated water (and air) is one of the biggest causes of livestock diseases.
Fresh, clean water means less disease and illness.
Better condition and feed conversion on our livestock.
Less emergency antibiotic use, and therefore less antibiotic resistance, including in the human populace.
Ultimately, all of these things result in increased ROIs on our farm as well.
It’s truly a win win win.
Modern tools like these continue to increase the efficacy of addressing the cause(s) at the source.
