New beers this week bring a few never before seen Belgian offerings, including a barrel aged Sour Blonde from Delirium and whiskey barrel aged Chimay Grand Reserve. Dancing Man Hefeweizen is back from New Glarus and Hop Butcher continues to push hazy boundaries with the latest and greatest in hop technology. The first Gose in some time is in the cooler from Minneapolis’ Modist brewin, and Working Draft canned a strawberry peach hard seltzer. Fun!

JUST ANNOUNCED!

From Cask to Cocktails: Lustau Sherry and Vermouth Event

Bodegas Lustau is a benchmark of quality in the world of sherry and vermouth, combining tradition and innovation. Bodegas Lustau was founded in 1896 by José Luis-Berdejo, a man with a modest upbringing as a court clerk. He and his son cultivated the land known as "Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza" and started exporting Sherry in 1950. The winery joined the Caballero spirits group in 1990, and this gave them the resources to expand and relocate to a central Jerez location, and develop into the iconic producer they are today.

We love sipping these products on their own, and we will certainly will be sampling them as is, but we will also be exploring their applications in cocktails by our own very own resident cocktail expert, Carrie. Expect samples of brand new Lustau-centric Steve’s canned cocktails and learn more about sherry, vermouth, and how they’re made.

The Name's Thursday...Thirsty Thursday

Turmeon Vermouth Blanco
Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain

In a classic martini, we recommend using dry vermouth (our favorites come from Dolin and Lustau), but there is whole other world of vermouth beyond the well-known dry and sweet. Turmeon Vermouth is a Blanco (also known as Bianco in Italy) vermouth, created by fortifying a dry white wine base (in this case, 100% Macabeo) and adding botanicals to the blend. Turmeon, made in Zaragoza for three generations, adds fourteen botanicals including rose, ginger, vanilla, and azahar (orange blossom), all of which have aphrodisiacal properties according to Turmeon. As is common in Spain, the vermouth is also sweetened.
On the palate, enjoy white fruit, pastry, and spice flavors with hints of citrus and balsamic. It is sweet with an elegant bitter finish. The label features dolphins as a nod to their connection to Dionysus (the god of wine) and Eros (the god of love) in Greek mythology.

Hotel Tango Gin
Indianapolis, Indiana

As the warm weather sets in, as do our cravings for something bright and refreshing, AKA gin! Gin comes in a variety of styles from the piney London-Dry style to the wacky botanical creations packed with things like peppermint and pickles. Today’s feature gin falls into the “modern” style gin, also known as New American or New Wave. These gins still present that juniper backbone, but instead of bringing it to the forefront, it instead plays nicely along more intense citrus notes. These types of gins are extremely versatile and overall crowd pleasers.
Hotel Tango Gin is exactly what you would expect from a modern gin. Bright, fresh, and bursting with notes of lemon peel, orange oil, and light peppery spice from the juniper.

It’s a bad week to be an IPA hater…

Big, fresh drops have arrived from some of the best haze factories in the country with Other Half, Hop Butcher, Phase Three, and Equilibrium. McFleshmans’ 547 pays tribute to the iconic Toronado beer bar in San Francisco while simultaneously giving you its best Pliny impression. Yes we said that.

Also new this week are some sought-after barrel aged gems from Side Project. BBT Rye 2025 was aged in Willet Rye barrels from a blend of their OWK, Vibes, and Generational recipes, held anywhere from 18 to 25 months in wood.

Continuance Blend 7 contains English Barleywine previously used in anniversary blends, aged from 11 to 29 months before being blended. Then, Thai bananas, maple syrup, and for a decadently complex beer suitable for any special occasion.

See you soon!

Back on the shelves of Steve's!

Is/Was makes beers that are subtle and intentional, often built around a wide range of thoughtful, eclectic adjuncts and other ingredients. Founder and head brewer Mike Schallau has been refining his approach since 2019 across a couple of contract brewing setups, and eventually settled in to their own taproom/brewery at 5121 Ravenswood Ave in Chicago. Savvy midwest beer drinkers may recognize that address as the original Metropolitan Brewing brewhouse. Dan was an early adapter of Is/Was thanks to Always Zag, a hoppy Brettanomyces Saison, and as it turns out, the third beer they ever made! It's a treat to be able to have Is/Was beers available in Wisconsin and we are the only store in the state that does! Here's what's on the shelf:

Tree Tipper: A honey and spruce tip Saison aged in Gin barrels
Tree Tipper: A honey and spruce tip Saison aged in Malort barrels
Will Be: Their flagship Saison brewed with spelt and triticale (wheat/rye hybrid)
Will Be (Brettanomyces): Flagship Saison bottle condiditioned with Brettanomyces
Country Beer: Saison conditioned on Balaton Cherries, collab w/ Hop Butcher
The Finer Points Of Bad Behavior XVIII: Saison w/ Rhubarb, conditioned on Brettanomyces Lambicus
The Finer Points Of Bad Behavior XXVII: Saison w/ Passionfruit, conditioned on Brettanomyces Bruxellensis

This week’s new beers!

Fair State’s Side Pull, is back to fulfill all of your Czech Pale dreams, and one of our favorite Hop Butcher hazies of all time gets cranked up to 10.25 (ABV) in Greener Moss. If you’re readying for a Knicks championship this weekend, what better way than a collab between two of the state’s best? Other Half and Drowned Lands collaborate on Grove Juice Double IPA. Stout season never ends with two rarely seen barrel aged ones from Brewing Projekt in celebration of their anniversary. Hacienda is back! Everything Eventually available for a limited time. And Indeed Mexican Honey variety packs are here just in time for our sampling with Molly tonight from 4-6. Stop in!

Finca Valpiedra ‘Cantos de Valpiedra’ Rioja 2019
Rioja DOCa, Spain

92 points, Wine Enthusiast
91 points, James Suckling
91 points, Vinous

In 1889, the patriarch of Familia Martínez-Bujanda started making wines in Rioja. Almost a century later, his great-grandchildren Carlos and Pilar are carrying on his legacy. They own and operate Finca Valpiedra, 80 hectares nestled into a sharp bend in the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. This unique landscape provides a microclimate and terroir unlike any other in the region. The name of the winery, Finca Valpiedra, translates to “Stone Valley,” a reference to the river pebbles that dot the soil. This soil type is more common in the Rhone Valley than in Rioja, contributing further to the area’s singular character. Finca Valpiedra only produces single vineyard wines, Cantos Valpiedra included.

This wine is made of 100% Tempranillo and is aged in both French and American oak barrels for twelve months before release. Dry and juicy, this wine has ripe strawberry and sour cherry notes as well as more savory tones such as tomato leaf, to***co leaf, dried herbs, and cedar. Touches of vanilla, chocolate chili, and fig are present on the finish. The wine has a great backbone of acidity and firm tannins to make this a long-lasting, high quality wine that will be tasting great until, conservatively, 2029.

Enjoy this beautiful Spanish red with a host of dishes such as roasted turkey, chicken paprikash, grilled pork chops, or sweet potato shepherd’s pie.
