I harvested all day today in the pouring rain and ankle deep mud. By mid day I was soaking wet and covered in mud and that’s how I spent the rest of the day. It’s part of it. I love it. But the whole time I kept thinking, I wonder if any customers will show up in the rain tomorrow morning to buy these vegetables I’m harvesting? I sure hope so! Haha. Guilt trips aside I do hope to see y’all in the morning. Looks like the rain chances are light and will be dwindling throughout the morning. Plus garlic skapes are ready!! And I’ll have a sale on head lettuce and kohlrabi. Don’t forget we’ll be at the Lanier mansion. 8:00 to 12:00

Do you want the third largest data center on the planet right here in Jefferson county? If not you need to show up at this meeting tonight. Don’t just post about it on Facebook. Show up. We need your presence to put pressure on our leaders to find some wisdom and do the right thing. I believe there will be a huge turnout tonight. Our county officials have been vague and the process has been rushed. We don’t even know what companies and developers are involved. We’re told this is just a procedural step and that is just a procedural step. But that’s how they do it. Then when all the procedural steps are complete they will claim their hands are tied to prevent a data center. We’ve been told a lot of lies about how this data center is different and won’t gobble up our water and jack up our electricity bills. But if you do a little research it becomes clear we’re not being told the whole story. There is a large sum of money being offered to the county that seems to be the proverbial carrot our leaders can’t seem to look past. But long term this project offers few if any benefits to our community and may very well negatively affect our quality of life. Even all the way out here on the east side of the county this project feels personal beyond just water and electricity. From my back porch I have a narrow but beautiful view through the trees across the Indian Kentuck creek valley to the hills beyond. A more or less direct line of sight to the proposed data center location. It seems distant. But the scale of the proposed data center has me unsure if I’ll hear the hum and see the glow at night. Think of all the lives that will feel more polluted by this monstrosity. Just so our county can feel awash with cash for a while before the payout dries up and leaves new leaders struggling to figure out how to fill the void. And just so one very wealthy family can get even wealthier. If they are hell bent on developing that piece of earth they could consider industries that would actually bring a long term benefit to our community. One that provides lots of jobs instead of one that will provide very few niche jobs for example. Or I have a better idea. Since they definitely don’t need the money, they could do us all a favor and donate or sell the land on the cheap to the county to go into a forest trust and expand the Kruger lake park for us all to enjoy. What a gift that would be for their neighbors and the birds and bees alike! Dreaming aside, please come to the meeting tonight. I’ve always kept this page focused on the farm and it always will be going forward. But this is too important for my farm and my community to not share. I’ll see you all tonight!

I hope to see everyone at the farmers market in the morning. 8:00 to 12:00. Remember it’s at the Lanier mansion. I’ll have… spinach, spring mix, arugula, radishes, green onions, kohlrabi, red and green leaf lettuce and kale. It looks like the rain is most likely going to hold off until the end of market. So don’t let that keep you away. Grab a rain coat or umbrella and come enjoy a beautiful spring morning in a beautiful spot with us!

As I’m sure most of you already know Trinity United Methodist Church was hollowed out by fire a couple days ago. It’s a heartbreaking loss for the whole community. Especially the congregation. Many of us had ties to it in one way or another. Mine started about twenty years ago in my early twenties when I moved into an apartment a half block up broadway street from the church. I was an avid runner at the time. Most of my runs finished turning up broadway from the river for a final push for home. I would never let myself stop running until I reached the church steps. It felt like home base. In my mid twenties I started experimenting with market gardening on my parents land. That of course landed me at the Madison Farmers Market. Which even at that time was on broadway street with the church as a backdrop and home base. As long as I’ve been involved with the farmers market the church has opened its doors to us. For bathrooms. For market supplies storage. For meetings in those early days when we were trying to figure out how to reorganize our market. For farm to table dinners. For inclement weather markets. I lived in that same apartment again in my early thirties. I wasn’t running much anymore but I must have walked by the church a million times always admiring the architecture and beautiful work of the masons who built it. Now all these years later, as a full time market farmer, it’s still the home base every Saturday. I just want to say thank you to pastor Doug and the congregation for being our partners all these years and putting up with our mess. My heart is with you. And thank you to all the firefighters who put their lives on the line.

Until further notice the farmers market is moving to the Lanier mansion lawn. Every Saturday. 8:00 to 12:00. I hope to see everyone there!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Madison farmers market tomorrow morning 8:00 to 12:00.
