We are so happy it’s fall, ya’ll! For us, it means getting ready to celebrate all of the holidays that keep families close during this season, and it also means fun fall produce and processing ducks and heritage turkeys in the next few weeks. We also don’t have to refill the poultry water as often, since the weather is cooler, plus the rain we’ve been getting has been great for birds and plants, alike! 🍂

This week you can grab bags of baby kale and baby arugula (as well as the usual spicy mix and fall mesclun mix) and if you arrive before 10am you can expect to see Uhtred dressed as either Buzz Lightyear or Spider-Man (he’s bringing both of his costume options) and the babies dressed as a pumpkin and Batman! Plus, coming before 10am means that you’ll get the chance to chat with Uhtred about his Halloween themed art! 🎃

Come on by the coolest corner in town and ask us how you can go ahead and reserve your Christmas Turkey before they all sell out! See you tomorrow! 🦃

There's nothing more special than receiving an excited message and picture from a customer who is super stoked about their first fruit tree harvest!

First harvests are always small, but they're also the most meaningful and special to new fruit tree owners. Congrats on your special harvest after the visit with your sweet little grandson! 😉

All year, you hear us talk about the many virtues of our heritage turkeys! It’s nearing the time of the year when you finally get to taste one of our birds for the first time (if you haven’t already). You may have cooked up a heritage bird before, or maybe this year could be your first crack at it! If you haven’t yet ordered your heritage Thanksgiving turkey we’ve got some good news for you… There are still some Thanksgiving birds left, and we are also offering more Christmas turkeys this year than in years past. 😉

You can order via this link or meet us at the Market any Saturday: http://www.ourochreway.com/product/thanksgiving-heritage-turkey-deposit/

So, why do we love heritage birds so much? ❤️

First of all, heritage turkeys are characterized by their slower growth. Heritage turkeys are domestic turkeys, but they more closely resemble wild turkeys in their appearance and behavior. The broad breasted, modern turkeys that make up the vast majority of turkeys raised in the US, grow twice as fast as heritage turkeys and reach such large sizes that their health suffers in the later stages of their development. In fact, many modern, broad-breasted turkeys have a very short lifespan and are unable to continue living past their “expiration” date. Because heritage turkeys have a very active life, and are grown to the age of seven or eight months, they have double the flavor and richness of an industrially farmed turkey. In the past, we had a small flock of heritage turkeys—and these birds were still healthy and going strong at 5 years old when we processed them for a family BBQ celebration.

Another important distinction between heritage turkeys and industrially raised, broad-breasted turkeys, is that heritage turkeys can reproduce naturally and do so when given space, time, and a flock of their own. Broad-breasted turkeys are bred only for the rapid production of flavorless meat, and are unable to breed naturally and must be artificially inseminated. That’s a bit freaky, right?

When it comes to enjoying your heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving—you’ll notice that these birds are excellent turkey specimens. They have a much more even proportion of dark to white meat, and their meat is richer and more moist. The body shape of a heritage turkey reflects their active lifestyle… They are more leggy than broad-breasted birds and don’t look pumped up on steroids like these more common turkeys often do.

Although heritage turkeys have become more popular in the last decade, there are still significantly less of them raised in the US than the industrially produced birds. While over 200 million factory farmed turkeys are pumped out every year, only about 25,000 heritage birds are raised on farms. That’s quite a difference!

Know your turkey, and get to know your farmer.

Fall is the best time for getting the greens! We have a variety of lettuces and other greens that are sure to make you smile, and will be available from now throughout the winter. We love growing, harvesting, and combining the different greens flavors to make your salad and spicy mixes unique every week!

This week we’ll have lettuce, tatsoi, red mustard, and Tokyo bekana! The red mustard is one of our favorite greens, because of its beautiful color and the spiciness it adds to any spicy mix. Tokyo bekana is new for us, and maybe not a green you’re familiar with! It’s also known as small Chinese cabbage or celery mustard, and it has a mild and peppery flavor without the bitterness of some of the mustard greens. The leaves are a lighter green color and can be harvested both in heads or as looseleaf greens.

Speaking of greens, the Corner Farmers Market has an exciting announcement regarding their Green for Greens program! An anonymous donor has agreed to match every dollar that’s raised for the Green for Green fund from now until Thanksgiving—up to $4,000! How exciting is that? Uhtred will be doing his part to help raise money for the program, by offering his one of a kind art tomorrow at Uhtred’s Table! He’ll be manning the table until his T-ball game. 😁

We can’t wait to see you tomorrow at the Corner Farmers Market from 8am-12pm, to talk about all things green! 😉

Yesterday a heron visited me, and today a praying mantis. She had a great time fighting my hair and hanging out on my earring. What good luck x2!
