With it being Farm Safety and Health Week, let's talk medication! Did you know that most medications have a meat and/or milk withdrawal (exception being EPA regulated products like fly control)? This is the time it takes for an animals body to process the medication, heal and become clear of the medication. Why is this important? Some medications we use are also used in people or some people may have allergies to these medications (like penicillin). We want to make sure the animal is free of these medications before it enters the food supply. Because of our high standards in the USA, residue testing is done at processing to assure our meat and milk are safe!
Here are some meat and milk withdrawal examples for dewormers! Note Eprinex and Cydectin are the only two with a zero day withdrawal!

What do these three vaccines have in common? They are less than $3 per dose AND they prevent a deadly disease that gives very little warning. At Virginia Herd Health we have seen several cases of BLACKLEG (Clostidium chauvoei) in the past two weeks!!! This is a bacteria found in the soil and produces a toxin in the animal. If you're lucky enough to see symptoms it may just be a little off, or a little lame, but most of the time they are DOA! Right now 5 wt calves are averaging $2,300, replacement heifers are $4-5k, herd bulls are $6,000+...imagine finding them GONE one morning due to lack of a
