I got a little more than half of my dahlias planted this weekend and it feels good to make some progress on that task. I still have a few dahlia plugs (baby dahlias grown from cuttings) to plant, and some tubers that I started indoors. It’s still just a bit too cold for anything with substantial growth just yet, but the unstated tubers will be fine tucked underground.
Here’s how I grow around 500 dahlias.
Right now, I have 14 raised beds for dahlias (I *might* need to build a few more …). Each bed is 3’ by 20’ and I can fit 40 dahlia plants in each. All of my beds were topped off with compost last fall.
Photo 1 - KA’s Mocha Jake - just because I love her 😍
Photo 2 - I store all of my dahlias over winter in plastic tubs with vermiculite. Those get hauled out to the garden in my trusty garden cart.
Photo 3 - I cover my beds with landscape fabric every winter, which keeps the weeds mostly at bay until I’m ready to plant. When I’m ready to plant, I peel that back and give the bed a good fluff and weeding.
Photo 4 - I then use a tape measure to make sure I’m keeping relatively even spacing.
Photo 5 - then I place the tubers on top of the soil at appropriate intervals.
Photo 6 - I then go through and bury each tuber on its side about 4-6” deep.
Photo 7 - Then I dump the extra vermiculite on the beds. In theory, you could dry this out and reuse it, but I have some clay in my beds, and adding vermiculite helps encourage loose, fluffy soil.
Photo 8 - supervising goats are VERY helpful in this process.
And that’s it for now! I’ll keep these beds weeded and watered until our first dahlias bloom in August, making it all worth it.
Are you growing dahlias this year? How do you grow yours without supervising goats???
