Grazing Through Drought

If the trend holds, in just over a month we will be entering the fifth year of "drought", as highlighted by two popular drought indexes in the charts below. Name that plant!
Probably one of the coolest native plant names for our eco-region. Native prairies should have way more diversity than what we see here in most USDA Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields. Cudos to USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Services Agency for encouraging CRP participants to manage these lands for more diversity. This plant appeared after a required “upgrade” over seeding in CRP.

“RATTLE SNAKE MASTER”.

With the spring drought we have been thankful for Holistic Grazing Management. We are still grazing through last year’s stockpiled grass. There is new green growth that the herd has been gorging on since March. Thank you Lord for the recent rains which has resulted in a green understory explosion. Every bite of green gets a little bite of last year’s brown grass to balance the rumen (cows fermentation tank). Soil moisture has been good all through the spring. Prayers for those in the drought area still waiting for moisture. Regenerative Ag principles help smooth out the weather extremes.

These little ones are crazy cute. Tell me why will this ewe only have one lamb the first year she gives birth but next year and into the future she will have twins or triplets? How does that work? Must be part of the created order. Things that follow the created order are “good” or “righteous”. Good job mamma ewe.
