We at Bower Family Farm hope that everyone is having a great start to the school year!! At Back 2 School Bash, the kids got to see “Lola the Lop” living her best life!
Mrs. Lederer and I go way back to the point, that I remember driving with her in High School to go pick up our very first English Lop babies when we were in 4-H together 🥰🥰

She reached out to me in the spring asking what I thought about one of our bunnies being a classroom pet and frankly my heart melted! I firmly believe that kids can learn a lot from animals and having one in a classroom has endless opportunities for learning from many directions.
Therefore, with the proper school approval, Lola the Lop was born on our farm in early February. Our kids loved on her for 8 weeks before she went to her forever home with the Lederer’s and she now gets to make kids smile everyday!

Thank you SO much to Mrs. Lederer for the idea and giving her such a loving home and to Austin for making Lola a school cage and a home cage!
We hope that everyone has a great and safe school year!

“Live like the gate is open”????
Our Highland Fiona saw that the gate to our backyard fence was open, she wiggled out of the pasture and invited herself into the backyard! Things have gotten so crazy around here that our kids think this is normal 😂😂

All I’ve talked this week is about how much we love fair! It holds some of our favorite memories, but it also holds an anniversary that makes me cringe. My Dad had his massive stroke of the brain stem on the last day of Fair in 2024. Honestly it feels like it was yesterday but it also feels like many years ago. A few weeks after the stroke when he was in rehab, he had a memory resurface that someone had walked into his room at the ER and said “you’re alive, why did they tell me to bring in a death certificate to a man that’s still alive”.
That statement often runs across my mind and hits me hard! Many doctors have told us that they don’t know how he survived, let alone how “good” he is doing. Life may not look like we imagined, we sold the Lake Life to be closer to home and raise our kids on a farm full of animals. We’ve done our best to adapt and keep him going as best as we can. He can walk for a short bit with his hemi-walker and he has gained a lot of independence, stability and speed when we got him his motorized wheelchair. Thankfully, his memory and speech were not touched and his sarcasm was actually turned up a little bit 😂

Here we are, two years later, the fair might carry a heavy memory, but tonight the gratitude is so much louder. We’ll take the farm life, the wheelchair lap rides for the kids, the close calls of him almost running over our feet and the extra dose of his sarcasm any day…over what almost was. Here’s to two years of defying the odds, cheering on the kids, and having my Dad right here where he belongs! ❤️❤️❤️

Gosh Fair week has flown by way too quickly! We’ve made some of my favorite memories this week that I’m going to need to spread out some posts 😊 So my next favorite thing about fair… has been watching SO many youth be completely exhausted at the end of their animal show, wipe the sweat from their forehead and put on a smile to help a “PeeWee” show their animal in the PeeWee class! It was fun to watch this happen for not only my kids, but the kids around us also.

What those “big kids” don’t realize is how “cool” they are in the eyes of the PeeWee showmen and how much of a positive influence they’re having on the little kids. Having gone through this cycle as a PeeWee into a showman, I never understood how important that PeeWee class was until I got to be the Mom watching the spark in my kids’ eyes light up as they showed with the “big kids” beside them! Thank you SO much to all the “big kids” who helped our “little kids” show Pigs, Sheep and Goats, you guys are now celebrities in the eyes of our kids!

We’ve talked to our kids about how “a smile is contagious”… well turns out, watching your confident and fearless 2 year old walk “my donkey Dominic” down the midway a few times this week… spreads more smiles than I ever imagined! 😂😂😂 We’re having some extra fun this year having an animal of our own at Fair. Tomorrow is his day to shine as it’s the Open Draft Horse and Donkey halter show day.

Day 1 of our Henry County Fair! Gosh there are a lot of things that I love about fair week…
1) Watching older kids take younger kids under their wing and teach them something new. Mason Elchinger took each one of our kids and taught them individually how to show a pig before PeeWee showmanship. The kids had such a great time and were proud of showing a pig in the big ring.
2) The memories made with family. As Novak was in the holding pen with his pig, he yelled over at me, “Mom, did you see how many people from my family are here to watch me”. I asked him if he was nervous, and he goes, no, I’m just SO excited for everyone that is here! 🥰🥰🥰 I want to give an extra special shoutout to the Davis’, Jo and Jill for making a visit from Columbus for the evening.
3) Fair gives reasons for some visits with friends, so a big thank you to Boyers for the visit today. I’m thankful for the memories that our kids make together!
4) Many more favorites to come but those are the first few from today!

Dominic our Donkey is in a pen on the South end, getting ready for his show on Monday with the kids. Tomorrow is Rabbit Show Day and we wish the best of luck to all of the exhibitors! It’s been a tough year with weather, so it was extra hard to get rabbits to eat and gain the amount of weight that they needed through this hot and dry summer. We’re very excited to see how everyone does tomorrow! 🐇 🏆

Did you know that boy Peacocks are called Peacocks and girls are called Peahens? In June, we brought home a 1 year old Peacock and Peahen and then in July, we were buying 2 goats from a farm and came home with another 1 year old Peacock and a baby Pied peachick! The Peacocks have the more vibrant colors of blue vs the Peahens are a duller green. The Pied one will end up being mostly or completely white and we won’t know if it is a boy or girl until it’s at least 6 months old. We also found it interesting that Peahens do not start laying eggs until they are between 2-3 years old! So it’ll still be awhile before we can have baby peachicks of our own on the farm, but they have been quite the entertainment around the farm! We play a game of “who can spot the peacocks first”, since they tend to rest in unique places around the farm. They even came knocking/pecking on the front door one morning 😂

All is quiet on the farm tonight! We’ve been working extra hard to get some things done off of our todo list in preparation for tomorrow’s event! We’re excited to welcome people to the farm and share these sweet animals with everyone! We will get the grid drawn in the morning and Rosie is gearing up to be the center of attention!! Thank you once again to everyone who has purchased a ticket for the Cow Patty Bingo. Once again you do NOT have to be present to win, but also if you didn’t purchase a ticket, you’re more than welcome to come visit the farm tomorrow from 2-4pm! (Also Elizabeth has been locked out of Facebook, so if you have messaged her, she’s still working on getting back in).

Since we’re in the middle of our breeder friends in Michigan and Southern Ohio, we’re lucky enough to spoil some extra chocolates this week before they go to their new homes and I had to do a photoshoot of 5 beautiful chocolates together! Two broken chocolates, solid chocolate steel, chocolate chinchilla and our broken chocolate chestnut!
