Homestead: By Dani We are a family of 5 in the beginning stages of our first real homesteading adventure! I'm a Registered Nurse turned homeschooling, homesteading mom!

My family moved from central Buckeye to the Rainbow Valley area so I could embark on this homesteading journey. My goal is to teach my kids some great lessons and make my family more self-sufficient. I also hope to be able to become a source of high quality and highly ethical goods to our community! I look forward to sharing this adventure with you, so thanks for being here!

I was able to give her a much-needed pedicure after milking today! Would anyone be interested in a video showing how I do that?

If you are milking livestock, how are you keeping it as clean as possible? I'm over here doing my best, but honestly have no idea what I'm doing 😅

In the last week and a half, I have:
- Sat with a laboring goat
- Tried and failed to resuscitate a stillborn
- Crawled around on the ground trying to milk my goat to collect colostrum
- Put together a milking stand
- Daily milking
- Learned to pasteurize milk
- Learned to make goat cheese

Thankful for a healthy mama goat and for the learning experiences ❤️

You may know a doe of ours l went into labor one week ago and unfortunately, the baby was stillborn. I decided to milk her once a day and just see how it goes. Mostly, I wanted to save the colostrum and transitional milk just in case we need it for a future baby. Luckily, I currently own A LOT of breastmilk storage bags, so freezing it was super easy.

Today, since my husband was home and I had help with the baby, I pasteurized 3 days worth of milk. It is an easier process than I expected.

Tomorrow, I have some things coming that I will then use to make cheese for the first time ever.

This kind of lifestyle isn't easy or glamorous, but I sure do enjoy learning new things.

Yesterday was a day of firsts.

The first time I missed Mass since the weekend after the baby was born.
The first time I had a goat go into labor.
The first time I lost a baby goat.
The first time I milked a goat.

I prayed for a smooth delivery and healthy mom and baby. God gave me everything except the baby.

Then I started working towards setting myself up to milk my goat for... I dont even know how long, honestly. I don't have stuff for milking. I thought I'd have a baby doing most of the work for a while...

Emotionally spent, I got into my bed and fell asleep.

When I woke up, it was like I could hear God saying, "my child, you have done your part to ensure this goat can deliver safely in the future. You have enough on your plate right now without a newborn goat and you are not obligated to sign up for months and months of milking just because of this loss. You have nothing to prove."

God reminded me to put on my own mask before I help others with theirs.

I will milk Fern enough to keep her comfortable, but not enough to encourage more milk production.

I give myself permission to do only what I can.
I give myself permission to be human.

We will try again next year.

The brown one on the left is my newest doeling, Snickers. We just brought home her brother (wether) and he needs a name. I'm partial to Doodle just so I can call "Snicker Doodle" when I go out 😆

What name do you think suits this beautiful young wether? (Pictured on the right)

After the flock started settling in for bed last night, we gathered them up and got them to their new owners. It's bittersweet to say goodbye to the flock I have put so much into while also getting to watch another family start their new adventure ❤️
