In bovine twin pregnancies consisting of one bull calf and one heifer calf, there is approximately a 95% likelihood that the heifer will be a freemartin.

A freemartin condition occurs due to the shared placental blood supply between the twins. Hormones and cells from the developing bull calf cross into the heifer’s bloodstream in utero, disrupting normal reproductive tract development. As a result, the heifer is typically born with underdeveloped reproductive organs and is functionally infertile
