The Alpaca Project

The Alpaca Project We are a small alpaca fiber farm in Goochland County Virginia. Our goal is to bring alpaca joy to as They are so sweet and so curious but also cautious.

I don't even remember the first time I saw an alpaca but I assume it was love at first sight. That's how it seems to happen for most people who love these animals. I started attending any event I could find where I knew there would be alpacas. I just love them. When my husband and I started dating he also loved the alpacas we would visit. We started to joke about one day having an alpaca farm of o

ur own.... maybe when we retire... maybe when we hit the lottery. In the last couple of years we started to think that maybe this alpaca dream could be real and in fact, maybe it could happen sooner rather than later. Now I approach alpaca events differently. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I'm trying to visit farms and hear the stories of other alpaca owners. I'm trying to create my own network of people with alpaca knowledge. Right now, as I'm creating this page Tom and I are looking for our next home and trying to find one with land for our very own alpacas. It's an exciting time. It's also kind of scary. Neither of us has every lived in the country and we've only ever visited farms. Our backgrounds are in architecture not agriculture. So, The Alpaca Project is what I'm calling this time in our life as we search for our farm, learn from our friends and lay the groundwork for this adventure. Eventually I hope this site changes to our farm site. God willing.

Delores has been sitting on one egg for, what feels like, EVER! I removed a lot of eggs because we are maxed out on ducks. She had two eggs that I was going to let her try to hatch but a snake got one. She caught off many snakes for this one. We really didn't think the egg would hatch but to our surprise, we have a tiny duckling. We don't need any more ducks but who can't love a duckling.

This has a limited audience in my feed. But it's so relatable for some of us.

The heat is really taking it out of all of us, hens included. Look at these tiny eggs. They are so cute!

After months of wonder and speculation, we finally know what color eggs Olive Chicken lays. She is an Olive egger and is supposed to lay green eggs. But it doesn't always work out that way. Her sisters lay brown eggs. I thought she'd been laying or was at least preparing to lay. Today I caught her in the act. She lays blue eggs. 🤷 It might be a touch green in some spots but it looks pretty blue to me. So we now have 4 blue egg layers.

Another great workshop at our Goochland Agriculture Extension office. This evening, we learned about rain barrels and got to make one of our own. A couple of months ago I was in a workshop that taught us how to grow mushrooms.
