Olga Iris Maldonado Romero

Olga Iris Maldonado Romero, 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 5:53 PM, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and loving family.
Olga was a beautiful, strong, courageous, and deeply loving woman whose life was defined by family, sacrifice, service, and an unwavering desire to help others. She gave so much of herself throughout her lifetime, not only to the family she loved so fiercely, but also to countless children, families, and individuals throughout the Springfield community.
Olga's commitment to helping others began at a young age. Her career in education and community service dates back to 1968, when she worked as a Teacher's Aide with the Head Start Program at Riverview Projects in Springfield. What began there would become a lifelong calling centered around advocating for children, strengthening families, and helping those who needed support.
Over the years, Olga served the Springfield community in numerous roles, including positions with the Springfield School Department, New North Community School, Massachusetts Migrant Program, Springfield Public Schools, New North Citizens Council, Sabís International Charter School, and Juan Gerena School.
As a bilingual Spanish-speaking advocate, Olga frequently served as a bridge between families, schools, and community organizations. She worked closely with parents and children, including bilingual families and families of children with special needs. She conducted home visits, addressed school attendance and language barriers, coordinated parent meetings and conferences, and connected families with community resources.
Her work eventually extended far beyond the classroom. Olga served as a social service case manager, assisting families with foster care placements, assessments, court referrals, housing, homelessness, and access to doctors, counselors, welfare agencies, and other community services. Throughout her life, her work also brought her alongside teen mothers, troubled youth, incarcerated individuals, individuals experiencing homelessness, and many others facing difficult circumstances.
Olga continued her education through Springfield College, where she studied English and Spanish, and Springfield Technical Community College, where she studied Sociology and Early Childhood Education.
Her commitment to her community did not end when the workday was over. Olga was a proud member of the Puerto Rico Cultural Center and spent many years helping with the organization of the Puerto Rican Festival, celebrating and preserving the culture and heritage she loved.
Olga also believed strongly in the importance of civic participation. During election seasons, she encouraged and advocated for people in her community to exercise their right to vote, reminding others that their voices mattered and deserved to be heard.
Perhaps one of the greatest examples of Olga's generosity was her commitment to families in need. For many years, she hosted an annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Families in Need, making sure families who were struggling could still sit down to a warm, festive Thanksgiving meal. Many times, Olga paid for much of it out of her own pocket. She did it not for recognition or praise, but because she could not bear the thought of families going without on Thanksgiving when she had the ability to help.
That was Olga. If someone needed help, she found a way.
But Olga's life wasn't all work and responsibility. She knew how to have a good time.
Olga loved music. She loved dancing. She loved to party. And perhaps even more than attending a party, Olga loved hosting one herself.
Her home was a place where people gathered. She loved bringing family and friends together, turning on the music, preparing food, dancing, laughing, and enjoying the people around her. For Olga, a party was never simply a party, it was another way of keeping people connected.
She believed in celebrating life.
Those who knew Olga also knew she was strong-willed, courageous, ambitious, funny, and feisty as hell. She didn't take B.S. from anyone. She spoke her mind, stood firmly for what she believed was right, and was never afraid to defend herself, her family, a friend, or even a complete stranger. She could make you laugh, tell you exactly what she thought, and love you fiercely, all in the same conversation.
And anyone who knew Olga knew that she was exactly the person you wanted in your corner.
Of all the roles Olga held throughout her life, however, none meant more to her than being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Her family was her greatest accomplishment and the center of her world. She sacrificed tremendously for them and loved them with everything she had. She was their rock—the person they turned to for strength, advice, protection, laughter, and unconditional love.
Olga was predeceased by her beloved husband, Florencio Maldonado; her mother, Carmen Delia Pabón; her father, Angel Luis Melendez; her stepfather, Luis Pabón Bonilla; and her granddaughter, Natalie C. Maldonado.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Edward Maldonado (Yvette Maldonado), and daughter, Jamary Rosa (Jesus H. Rosa); her grandchildren, Saxoney B. Rodriguez (Ricky Rodriguez), Jalen K. Rosa, Nya G. Maldonado, and Nylie J. Maldonado; and her great-grandchildren, Karina S. Rodriguez, Destiny I. Rodriguez, and Avalina B. Rodriguez; along with extended family, dear friends, former colleagues, and countless people whose lives were touched by her compassion, generosity, and advocacy.
Her family will miss her laughter, her strength, her feistiness, her advice, her hugs, her music, her dancing, the gatherings she created, and simply knowing she was there.
There will never be another Olga.
While the emptiness left by her passing cannot be filled, her family finds comfort in knowing that she is at peace with the Lord and reunited with those she loved who went before her—her husband, Florencio; her parents; and her beloved granddaughter, Natalie.
Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; through the families she helped; through the children she advocated for; through the people she encouraged to find their voices; through the families who sat around a Thanksgiving table because Olga made sure there was food on it; and through every person who walked through her door and was made to feel like they belonged.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, concluding with a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at Wilbraham Funeral Home, 2551 Boston Road, Wilbraham, Massachusetts.
Burial will immediately follow at St. Michael's Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, Massachusetts 01109.
Olga loved flowers, and her family welcomes those wishing to honor her memory with flowers. Please have floral arrangements delivered to Wilbraham Funeral Home by Friday, September 4, 2026, the day before her service.
Olga lived a life of strength, sacrifice, service, family, music, dancing, laughter, and above all else, love.
She spent her life bringing people together, standing up for others, and making sure those around her knew they mattered.
Forever loved. Forever missed. Never forgotten.
