Alex was an African Grey parrot studied by cognitive scientist Dr. Irene Pepperberg for about 30 years, beginning in 1977. Alex learned more than 100 vocal labels, could identify 50 different objects, recognize colors, shapes, and materials, and use some words and phrases in meaningful ways.

He could also recognize quantities up to six and perform limited addition with small numbers of items. On September 6, 2007, Alex died at age 31, younger than many captive African Grey parrots can live.

A pathology report later attributed his death to a sudden event associated with arteriosclerosis, such as a fatal arrhythmia, heart attack, or stroke. The night before he died, Alex reportedly said his usual goodnight phrase to Pepperberg: “You be good. I love you. See you tomorrow.”

These routine words took on special significance after his sudden passing. Alex’s work with Pepperberg provided groundbreaking evidence of advanced cognitive abilities in birds, particularly in communication, categorization, numerical understanding, and abstract concepts.
