The driller didn't put the iron in the ground.
The pump installer didn't either. The plumber tied it in exactly the way he was supposed to.
Six weeks later the sink is orange, and all three of them are getting a phone call.
I've watched this happen on the same house more than once. Everybody in the chain did their job right, and everybody's name ends up on the complaint, because the one thing nobody did was test the water before somebody sold a system.
Here's what gets missed: that water was always going to do that. It was doing it before the rig showed up. The only real question was who'd be standing closest when the homeowner finally noticed.
You can put yourself outside that argument in one step. Get the numbers first.
Test before anybody picks a product. Iron, manganese, sulfur, pH, hardness, the full panel, not just hardness because that's what the test strip does.
Ferric or ferrous. Same iron on the report, two completely different builds. Guess wrong and you install a filter that was never going to work on that well.
Watch the pH. At 5.8 nothing stains, so nobody flags it — it just quietly eats the drop pipe, and you'll be back out there in three years for something that looks like a different problem.
Put the results in the customer's hand with your name on them. Now the water has a documented condition and you have a documented recommendation.
That last one is the whole ballgame. A homeowner holding a water report doesn't blame the last guy who touched it. He blames the water — and he asks you what it'll take to fix it.
That's why I built Source Ops. It starts at the test and won't let you pick a system until the numbers say which one. That's all I'll say about it here.
Drillers and pump guys, how many callbacks have you eaten for water chemistry you had nothing to do with?
