Overall impressions of Beringer Family Farms Briskets

Just finished trimming and seasoning and these briskets are by far the best briskets I have handled.

Little to no trimming, excessive amount of marbling and high quality for sure.

Weekly Recap for the 2nd week of August:

šŸŽ‚Went out to eat for my brother Lee’s birthday and ended the night playing at the park with the kids. Having all 5 of us siblings back in the same state and making a conscious effort to get together regularly makes my heart so happy. Family time is the best time!

šŸ”Lots of cousin time with M’Lynn! She’s basically with us everyday now whether they are in Cascade or we are in Tipton. On days when they are apart it’s almost like someone is missing šŸ˜† they love letting Grandma’s chickens out for the day

🐮Brian and I snuck away for a few days and attended the IAS Feedlot Tour & celebrated our 4 year anniversary. Every other year our feed nutritionists host this trip to give their customers the chance to see different yards and facilities. It’s a great learning trip and also fun to connect with other farmers who are on the trip.

🌽We put up another 10 dozen of freezer corn while trying to keep 3 kids entertained throughout the process

🐮Normal weekly routine of checking cows and playing in the mineral feeder-their favorite place to play!

This post is šŸ’Æ spot on! I can’t imagine raising our kids any other way, but quite honestly the future of our industry and sustainability in the long term is really scary and not something I necessarily want to hand over and tell my kids to figure it out…

Tyson closed its Joslin beef plant Thursday.

If you aren't in the cattle business, there’s a good chance you never heard about it.

And if you did, it probably sounded like another plant closure in another town.

But standing on this gravel road, looking at this picture, I see something much bigger.

I see one less buyer competing for American cattle. One more piece of our market concentrated into fewer hands. One more squeeze on the people standing at the very beginning of the food chain.

And I see two little girls who absolutely love cows, and I wonder what kind of cattle industry we are handing them.

Because this picture is almost exactly what people imagine when they think of cattle country.

Cows grazing under a ridiculous Iowa sunset. Little girls following Dad down the road. One riding on his shoulders. Boots, pasture and a life that looks pretty damn good from the outside.

Our own little version of Yellowstone.

What the picture can't show you is the kitchen-table math behind it.

It can't show you what happens when another cattle buyer disappears. When competition shrinks. When cattle have to travel farther. When a handful of companies gain more control over the market while the people actually raising the cattle lose more of theirs.

Joslin isn't just a plant closing.

That loss ripples through feedlots, truckers, sale barns, feeder cattle, cow-calf producers and rural communities.

Eventually, it reaches your supper table too.

Because fewer companies controlling more of the path between pasture and plate should concern every person who eats beef.

This is why knowing where your food comes from matters.

Know your farmer.
Know your rancher.
Buy local when you can.
Support your local locker.

And when you buy beef elsewhere, ask harder questions.

Where was that animal born?
Where was it raised?
Where was it harvested?

American consumers deserve meaningful Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling. They deserve to know whether the beef they're buying was actually born and raised by an American cattle producer.

Talk to your representatives.

Demand MCOOL. Demand competitive cattle markets. Demand more from the associations that are supposed to represent cattle producers.

Because when I look at this picture, that is the part that gets me.

Our girls don't love some romantic idea of ranch life.

They love the actual cows.

The checking calves, opening gates, muddy boots, mending fences, knowing which cow belongs to which baby, ā€œDad, can we keep this one?ā€ version.

And if that love stays with them, we aren't simply raising the next generation of cattle(wo)men.

We're raising cattle warriors.

Because if they decide this honest, hard, God-given work is what they want to spend their lives doing, they are going to have to fight harder than I ever imagined just for the privilege of doing it.

Fight for land.
Fight for markets.
Fight for competition.
Fight for transparency.
Fight for enough margin to survive.
Fight to keep American cattle in the hands of American cattle families.

I want them to inherit evenings like this.

Cows on grass. Dad in the pasture. A sunset that stops you in your tracks. A life built around animals they have loved since they were old enough to say the word cow.

I hate knowing they may also inherit the fight to keep it.

So when you hear that another beef plant closed and think it has nothing to do with you, look a little closer.

Because while everyone is admiring the sunset, the future of the American cattleman is being decided quietly in the background.

And once enough cattlemen are gone, enough competition is gone, and enough control has been handed over, getting it back is going to be one hell of a fight.

Today marks 4 years of being married to my best friend šŸ«¶šŸ» on one hand it feels longer than that considering all we have worked for and accomplished in that short amount of time plus starting our family together, and on the other hand I look back through our wedding photos and it feels like it was just yesterday. My mom always said I needed an older guy and boy was she ever right! I’m so glad he didn’t give up trying to talk to me even when I wasn’t the easiest to scoop up, but I couldn’t imagine it any other way now. We constantly remind each other the way we choose to run our businesses and lives doesn’t have to make sense to anybody but ourselves, although managing two houses and farms does get slightly overwhelming sometimes šŸ˜‰

Every other year our feed company hosts a feedlot tour trip that always falls on the week of our anniversary so that’s how we celebrated again this year. Two charter busses full of cattle feeders touring other facilities in Illinois and Iowa that all had their own niche and unique build. It’s always fun to get off the farm and see other places to get ideas of what you can bring home and implement on your farm. I think my favorite part is also the bus convos and after dinner talks with all the people you meet and get to know each trip. Spending one on one time with Brian and talking to like minded people instead of a wild toddler and sassy one year old is good for the soul šŸ˜†

Seen this trend going around and thought I would add to it. In general, farmers and ranchers are SO ā€œchicā€ and cool because we do what we do everyday. We will all admit, it is hard - hard to pencil financially, hard to take any time off, hard to deal with the ups and downs of weather on crops and livestock. Each day, our livelihood is a coin toss - no guarantee. Yet, we love what we do and being a source for quality, safe food for our family and yours is so important to us. There is nothing like raising our kids and showing them resilience through adversity and the beauty of stewardship for the land, livestock, and environment. We take leaps everyday and will continue to do so even if we fall - for us and youšŸ«¶šŸ¼šŸ„©
