Mountain Roots Produce LLC Growing storage vegetables for the San Juan Basin Look for a lot more local goodness once the ground is cover cropped and the snow flies later this fall.

Started in the winter of 2011 and located at 7600 ft, Mountain Roots Produce (Mr.P) was started with the goal to extended the availability of locally produced winter storage vegetables through the winter months at above a mile high in the greater Durango, Colorado area. This year's main crops include beets, carrots, golden turnip and rutabaga, with a large 1.5 acre garlic planting this fall and di

versifying into cabbage, celeriac, potatoes, winter squash and parsnip in the 2012 season. Some summer vegetables are available (romaine heads, cilantro, purple top turnips, and summer squash) at local restaurants and health food stores.

Buckwheat field at sunset, looking so good!

We are soaking up the last moments of this gorgeous cover crop, as Mike is mowing and incorporating it this weekend.

July on the farm has brought the usual - crops needing attention in every direction, that unmistakable smell of tomato leaves while pruning/trellising, cracked fingers, heat induced goofiness, equipment breakdowns and repairs, long days, tasty veggies, good meals, stunning flowers.

And lots of celebrating the wins, especially in this weird drought year. Wins like this gorgeous field of buckwheat Mike planted a couple weeks ago! Mmmm - there’s a particular comfort felt when looking out at a field of cover crop glowing green. If you know, you know :)

Have a beautiful day!

Garlic Harvest begins…

We harvested the first two varieties of garlic yesterday. 2-3 weeks earlier than usual here, which feels a little wild. The garlic looks gorgeous though and has us excited about this year’s crop!

Pictured here is Uzbek, a variety we have been slowly building up our seed stock on for the last couple years.

Stay tuned on our Garlic Shop opening date - couple of busy farmers here trying to troubleshoot Shopify.

They’re coming…The cherry tomatoes are all pruned, trellised and loading up with fruit. Won’t be long now!
