It’s been a few days since I’ve updated everyone on General Orange. It’s been quite the week, and honestly, I didn’t have it in me to post another update until today. 🧡
After spending Monday hooked up to an IV, General went back Tuesday morning to have his levels checked to see if the fluids were helping. Unfortunately, his numbers were still off the charts. We talked through our options again and decided we didn’t want him to suffer, so we made the heartbreaking decision to put him down. I scheduled it for that evening so the kids would have a chance to say goodbye after school.
General came home and spent the day relaxing on a hay bale in the barn. That evening, Stryker and I took him back to the vet.
While we waited for the doctor, General was his same sweet self. He was asking for pets, making biscuits and showing more energy. He even peed all over me, which at least told me he was producing urine. Stryker had been pretty quiet through everything, but then he looked at me and asked, “Are you sure there is NOTHING more they can do?”
I told him I didn’t think so, but that we would talk to the doctor one more time. Just like him, I wasn’t able to accept we were making the right decision with how different he was now acting.
When she came in, even she said the cat sitting in front of her didn’t match the cat she was seeing on paper. She offered him food, which he happily scarfed down. Seeing how alert, active and normal he was acting, she didn’t feel right putting him down either.
She knew that unfortunately we didn’t have unlimited funds for 24-hour hospitalization at an emergency vet, so she helped us come up with another option. We took him home with subcutaneous fluids for the night, and he would come back Wednesday morning for another full day on the IV. To keep the cost down, we skipped additional bloodwork and urinalysis that day.
He spent Wednesday on IV fluids again and continued looking really good. They were comfortable sending him home with more subcutaneous fluids and taught me how to give them myself at home.
Thursday, he stayed home, got his fluids from us and continued acting like General. We scheduled one more blood and urine test for Friday afternoon.
By Friday, he was still acting completely normal, but I kept telling myself, and the kids, not to get our hopes up. We still had no idea how much kidney damage there could be. After all, his levels had been checked twice already and had been off the charts both times.
Today we finally got our answer. Everything is completely back to NORMAL.🧡😭
After a week of thinking we were going to lose him, taking him to the vet fully expecting to say goodbye, and then deciding to give him just one more chance because he was showing us he wasn’t ready…
General Orange is still here. Thankfully, he only used one of his nine lives this week. 🧡🐈
