When we think about immune systems and fruit we immediately think of elderberry. However, there is another fruit that the Native Americans used to use in their medicine. It is called Aronia Berry.
Some of you may have seen this berry in the back corner of our field. It is the size of a blueberry but it looks black (really super dark purple). It's sharp mouth drying effect is definitely an acquired taste. But this magical little berry has 3x more antioxidants than a blueberry. It is a great source of fiber and vitamin A & C. It has more iron and zinc (and more) than elderberry. It helps prevent colon cancer, reduces inflammation, reduces cell damage in breast cancer, reduces blood pressure.
I have found that when you make a syrup and strain the pulp out it no longer has that sharp drying effect on your mouth. I made the syrup and stored it in the freezer. I use it in tea, by itself, on ice cream and it is very good & good for you! Some just take a teaspoon when they are not feeling 100%.
WE ARE NOW PICKING ARONIA! I have printed the Aronia Syrup recipe that I have used and have it available (free) in the Market Shed. Who couldn't use a boost to their immune system?? They are available as u-pick only. If you decide to make your syrup with raw honey we have that available in the Country Market.
As with anything, including natural, check to make sure there are not interactions with a specific condition or medication you are taking.
There are way more benefits to Aronia than I have listed. I have some links below so you can read about the amazing things this little berry can do.
