Watch our new video to learn about silvopasture at Rising Locust Farm!
We are a collective farm practicing regenerative agriculture that works towards healing both land and our community. And yes, by planting many locust trees.
We do this by rotationally grazing livestock, planting edible tree polycultures, cultivating mushrooms and hosting events and skillshares! The locust tree thrives in degraded landscapes where other trees won't grow. Its role in the landscape is that of a healer, turning depleted soils into a rich biological system that allows for more and more diversity to flourish. Along the way it provides ferti
lizer, firewood, nutritious forage, shade, and fenceposts all while growing many feet each year. Our hope as a farm is to mimic the locust as a healer of land. We are trying to create farm systems that regenerate soil, the health of our local ecology, and rural communities while growing nourishing food. We are trying to do this through perennial pastures with multiple species of livestock; planting fruit, nut and timber trees on pasture to create a diverse savanna-like ecosystem; using simple earthworks and technologies to harvest water and prevent any soil erosion; and by connecting and collaborating with our local community to share knowledge, resources and opportunities.

Stay tuned for the release of Moo-Duck Brewery's Belgian Dubbel featuring our own American Plums!! This will mark the third year in a row this concoction has made the Moo-Duck seasonal rotation of beers, and is a favorite of Mike, Kristen, and RLF (we are slightly biased, but are being truly honest!!)! For years, Moo-Duck Mike and crew have been making notable beers with herbs and fruits (um, The Remedy), and does not shy away from new ingredients! One year, he experimented with a lemon balm and yarrow beer (for the musings of one such home brewer from RLF) that was Very Drinkable indeed! We are so grateful Moo-Duck Brewery has been willing to experiment with our American Plums!
American plums (Prunus americana) are such a flavorful and versatile fruit! The taste is like none other. The closest comparison we can make is to a Now n Later candy! These sweet-tart fruits are small, about the size of a large cherry, very tart when under ripe, but soften and sweeten when left to sit out (like a pear or peach). The shrubs/small trees produce an annual prolific yield of fruit, which is always impossible to consume completely fresh. Luckily, American Plums make stellar, jam, wine, and beer! Calling all preservationistas to get a harvest of American Plums and do their own concocting!
We'll have American Plums in season beginning early September, and may also be part of our U-Pick orchard!
Do you have land?? Maybe you'd like to plant your own patch of plums. Check out https://www.etsy.com/shop/FERNWEYediblenursery for plants for home brewers!

We will be planting more trees tomorrow (Sun Nov. 28) from 10-4 pm if you want to come lend a hand. More trees means a better life for these wonderful creatures! If you don't see us just walk on out into the pasture or give the farm a call at 717-967-4012 and we will let you know where we are. See you tomorrow!
This blustery morning was spent under the shelter of walnut and dying ash, while planting hickories in the canopy openings of the woodlot. The pigs ran here during the summer, clearing and trampling the brush, foraging for nuts and grubby worms. What was once a tangle of multiflora rose is now accessible without having to bushwhack. We will be seeding these open areas with a native woodland groundcover mix as well.
It was tough to capture yesterdays tree planting while the sun was in full glory, but here we have some early apple varieties going into the rows of pasture trees. These apples were grafted back in March and planted in the nursery, sheltered from wind and intense sun. We also planted some high value Mulberry varietals to complete this rotationally grazed pig pasture design. ‘Hog Heaven’ as we call it, will have seasonal tree crops as part of the forage available for pigs, adding nutritional diversity and high calories to help minimize (ideally eliminate) the need for supplemental grain grown off farm. Pasture trees provide shade that ALL animals need and a diverse soil ecosystem in which pigs will love to root through! Let’s not forget that these apples, mulberries, chestnuts, persimmons, hazelnuts are absolutely edible and nutritious for humans! And how about combating climate change while growing so much food!? How many functions have we stacked with trees??
547 trees planted on Saturday! Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who came by for a few hours, or for the whole day - we had over 30 people stop in to help with the good work on a gorgeous fall day!
We will be planting again on Saturday, November 21, if you missed your chance, and want to join us for the next round. (Or if you came on Saturday, and just want to get your hands in the soil one more time before the winter sets in...)
Todays lessons from the field: digging potatoes later in the season has advantages, but increases the chances of maiming a hibernating toad. This toad incurred a light wound on the backside, and I must assure you, we had great remorse regarding the accident. We try our best to avoid such cruelty! Also pictured is a mature clump of leftover clover cover crop. The taproot and lateral roots create fixable nitrogen with the mutualistic aid of rhizobia bacteria. This genus should reside in healthy soil, but can be found in mycorrhizal seed inoculants. When in doubt about your soil biology, use mycorrhizal seed inoculants to boost microbial and fungal diversity.
We have grass-fed Katahdin ewe and wether lambs for sale to start a new flock or add to your existing flock. $225/lamb or $200 if you buy 5 or more. And, if you are interested in purchasing a whole lamb for your freezer email or call us at [email protected] or 717-967-4012.

Take a virtual tour of our mushroom yard at Rising Locust Farm with Jono Droege!
We’re making sure Jono works hard up until his last day here at the farm. Soon he’ll be off to prep ground in Minnesota. Here he is showing off proper form while digging up the maple-grove-soon-be-bramble-beds. This tool is the magna gracia- an Italian designed tool, made for getting at rocks and roots. Two-tined digging on one end and a heavy duty hoeing on the other. We got this from our friends at / #2022 #?
Maybe it was because I needed a snack, maybe it was the immense sadness upon hearing the starvation occurring in Yemen, but running into these feral Concord grapes whilst laying out orchard beds will probably be the best part of the day. Despite not being a big fan, these really hit the spot. Even though we may not always get what we want, we usually get what we need. Just a reminder to be grateful for the gifts.
We currently have an abundance of shiitake mushrooms! Forest grown and super yummy. Normally $14/lb SALE THIS WEEK $11/lb if you buy 2 pounds or more at our farm store. Available while supply lasts.
The Wild American Plum season has ended. Last year we were blessed with 500lb from our hedgerow! This year was not so abundant, yielding only 50lbs. Our harvest all went down the road to yesterday and will create a lip-smackin seasonal small batch!
This Is Crazy Dave’s Flower Kveik utilizing our fresh yarrow and lemon balm! This is a darn fine beer, folks! Tangerine compliments the kick of the yarrow superbly in this no-boil brew. Get out to and try it, along with their other tasty libations! What farm product do you think should use next in a brew? Mutton shanks? Pork picnic??? Stay tuned! (That’s the yarrow talking now 🥴)
Our July newsletter...just barely made it before August arrives... 😊

Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
The summer is hot, and pigs like shade, so we moved our pigs to the woods for a few months. This video shows them crossing the Little Chiques creek to get to a new fenced area. They will happily dig in the cool shade, and hopefully uproot lots of the invasives, like multiflora rose and honey suckle. Crossing the stream was an adventure, and it took a little coaxing!
INTERNS WANTED!!! Now that we've moved to yellow phase in Lancaster, we've decided that we can reopen our internship. We're looking for 1-2 people who can work Mondays and Tuesdays, starting immediately until the end of October. We are looking to partner with self-motivated individuals to share in the work that we do and to provide foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in regenerative agriculture, permaculture design, homesteading and community living. Individuals are expected to make good choices in their private lives around COVID-19 protocol as we have elders who live on the farm. Please DM us here, email [email protected], or call 717-967-4012.
